1'st, buying a 1.2KW PSU for such system is stupid, there's no two ways about it..... buying a 1.2KW unit that costs ~350$ for such a system is miles beyond stupid, it's bordering some strange pathologies... but we won't talk about that. smile.gif
2'nd, look for a Rosewill Capstone unit at newegg, 550-650W, use the difference to update your system.

This.

Get a 600W PSU and then upgrade your mobo/cpu to a 2600K. Decent prices for used ones.

Capstone psu's are excellent. Rosewill has really stepped up their quality. Even the hive series are good.

i love newegg (and tigerdirect) but i'd never buy rosewill anything. (rosewill is newegg brand isnt it?!) rosewill imo is synonymous with poor quailty and i tip toe passed anything they have. i was surprised and impressed seeing they have platinum modular psu's. but no thank you.

my tagan 1100w psu was overkill for my system. i got it in those 5 second window newegg open box deals. every quarter i buy my rig something nice in reward for it making me money on the music end. at first everything seemed overkill but some parts like the ssd turned out to be great investments despite them costing me over $200 at the time. the 128gb m4's now now cost what $100? and its only been less than a year since i got mine.

so my rig is like my gf. if i wanna spend money on her. don't judge me. hmmsmiley02.gif i wouldnt wanna buy her a rosewill anything and while i'm at my shows poof! it blows. if i want my girlfriend wearing shiny things then that's what's it gonna be.

with that said we're only gonna go with 80+ platinum, fully modular cards... gotta go with a known brand. not some tagan type company that won't be in existance 2 yrs down the road.
we're gonna go with a good psu now because i need one asap. the mb and cpu will come later on....

now i gotta feed you guys reps....

Rosewill isn't a newegg only brand or at least I've never heard of anything leading me to think as such; you can get Rosewill products all over the place. The quality varies a lot...that is why you have to research who built the guts of the power supply (or whatever product...I don't think they much themselves). If it was made by a quality company it is good deal.

Overkill is fine. This is OCN. No such thing as overkill. There is a such thing as over spending. My PSU is massive overkill as well, but it came cheap. So when making a recommendation no one can justify something like that unless you say no limit on the budget. With overkill also comes the price of less efficiency. A 1100w psu on your rig was probably running at 25% load under a stability test....mine isn't much better though this 580 is a power hog so I might hit 40% if I am lucky...but I am hoping to get a SLI setup going one day....but that is currently too much overkill at 1080p gaming. If you are under 50-75% load your PSU's efficiency will drop and you not likely be "80+" anymore.

Remember, it doesn't take an Engineer to build something super strong and overkill for its purpose. Any one can do that. An Engineer builds something that will serve its purpose using the least amount of materials and the lowest cost possible. So that is where all the overkill comments come from.

Fully modular, 1000w, platinum and gorgeous? Deffinitely the XFX 1000w Platinum edition it's the best looking power supply I've seen, it's fully modular, 1000w and platinum. Also it has the silent fan mode where the fan won't start spinning unless there is more than 30% load or 30 degrees (or something close there) needless to say I've never heard it spin tongue.gif.

Did I say it's gorgeous? Because it really is tongue.gif.

EDIT: Btw it's not cheap but when I went around looking for reviews for a 1000w platinum power supply this one just destroyed everything else imho

225 USD on newegg
