Nah, you don't need to format when...

Installing a new mobo and CPU... not at all!

My story, I had a 775 system and recently got a brand new 1155 based one.
Before installing the new stuff I made sure to remove every chipset driver and the like. Including video drivers.

At first, I would get BSOD as soon as the yellow and red little spheres appeared on "Starting Windows"... Then I thought well that's it, will need to install a brand new system.

So yeah, I started fresh in a new HD and... decided to read more about said myth, "blablabla you need to format when installing new stuff", and surprisingly that was 80% of the answers. The most passionate defenders would talk about HAL (Hardware something. It basically makes W7 bound your system during the first instalation), and how it would be IMPOSSIBLE to continue using an old installation. The rest said that you didn't need to do such thing.

Then, I dont remember where, I read that you needed to change HDD mode from AHCI to IDE in the BIOS. I was like, when nothing to lose so yeah, gonna give a go. AND SO, the most unbelievable thing happened... MY OLD SYSTEM BOOTED! biggrin.gif
I got *happey* and Windows proceeded to install everthing it needed, like SATA controllers. However I would still get a BSOD if I changed back to AHCI. However, I looked abit more about this issue, and Windows Fixer did all the stuff and ELIMINATED the problem, like it never existed..

Until now, I had no BSOD, crashes, glitches, everthing just works fine as a clock.

Think and try everthing before resorting to a clean install or worse, format:c

Thanks for reading! Just thought it would be nice to share my experience thumb.gif

I've made that mistake before. I changed my SATA controller mode to IDE to boot up into XP, and forgot to change back. Took me a good 20 minutes of wondering if i corrupted my install lol

A yes, forgot about that too. In fact, I DID some repair using the CD but wasn't enough to get rid off that BSOD.

AHCI was DEFINITELY the culprit.

Well, it's only because you originally installed with IDE mode. Once you install Windows in either mode, you can't switch to the other (unless you plan on reformatting).

Or doing the registry edit, but its usually best to format, yeah.

Is it really best to format? Having to re-activate (through phone calls) programs, losing saved dat and prefs are definitely bigger nuisances than formatting rolleyes.gif

It depends how old your install of windows is, I just reinstalled windows 7 on my sig rig and have noticed everything seems much faster and smoother. Definitely worth the hassle I would say.

Sadly I lost my beloved EQ setting as that was the one thing that I forgot about frown.gif

After running for three years, windows was ready for a reinstall (runs 24/7).
