19" rack mountable phase systems.

Thread Starter
OK, so let's say I had the following requirement...

5.8Ghz+, 24/7, on Ivy Bridge, with as many cores condensed into a 19" rack mountable system as possible?

I'm looking at phase change and have ordered an LD XL suction system and bench to first test a few mobo/chip combinations before trying to look at the bigger picture. If I can get the above speeds (or ideally faster) 24/7 stable, I'll be looking to replicate some kind of phase change into a 19" rackable system for deployment everywhere - about 30 or so systems.

I've currently got about 30 Sandy Bridge air cooled machines that do ~5.1Ghz but am thinking of taking the next step in terms of phase change - at the moment each of these machines use 3RU of rack space, but it's expensive in the data centres I'm thinking of putting these machines into - from all accounts a phase change system is going to be about 5RU high, which is problematic.

But before I get ahead of myself I'm looking to know:-

1. Does anyone know of any 19" rackable boxes that have a phase change system preinstalled? Less than or equal to 3RU would be ideal, however anything as a box would be OK to start with.

2. Ideally I'm looking for as much core density per RU as possible out of these machines. Was thinking of 2 x Maxiumus V GENE under phase per box might be doable, but again not sure if anyone else has had similar experience. Ideas?

Thanks in advance. smile.gif

Personally, I really can't see any phase systems being rack-mounted and ready to buy, you'll have to have them custom-built.

You're also very unlikely to see 5.8GHz on a single stage. Ivy bridge has a kinda "no-mans land" where there's very little scaling with lower temperature. With single stage, you might be aiming at 5.4GHz 4C/8T (maybe less)?

If you want 5.8GHz 4C/8T, 24/7, you're looking at -100c under load or colder. Probably colder.

OK, always thought custom built was going to be the approach. As for the "no mans land", I've seen a number of reviews with processors topping 6.0Ghz on SS (perhaps only for suicide runs though?), however I'm willing to listen to anyone whose personal experience differs. Can you explain in a little more detail please?

Thanks again.

I believe you might be confusing SS with cascade. Single stage at its absolute lowest temperature, assuming zero load on the chip, might get down to about -50°C while a strong two-stage cascade unit can do around -100°C. At single-stage temperatures, you're likely to stabilize 5.2GHz-5.5GHz as long as it's not getting any warmer than -30°C or so when under load.

If you check this link, you can browse through the CPU-Z rankings based on cooling:

http://hwbot.org/benchmark/cpu_frequency/rankings?hardwareTypeId=processor_2493#start=0#interval=20#coolingType=

Keep in mind that is CPU-Z. If you want some semblance of stability, WPrime 1024M would be a better source:

http://hwbot.org/benchmark/wprime_1024m/rankings?hardwareTypeId=processor_2493#start=0#interval=20#coolingType=

I'd be quite interested to see if something like this could do the job:

I was under the impression that the issue with long term phase or cascade use was processor corrosion, that with anything less than "dew point" (18C?) it was difficult to get insulation good enough for 24/7 use? There was a strong peltier and phase adoption in 2005/2006 that died away. (VapoChill units for example.) I thought that was because of the long term issues, and that those methods were better suited to "suicide runs" or short term use rather than 24/7. No?

You can definitely insulate a system well enough for 24/7. The biggest issues with chips after C2D and the like (when Vapochill was popular) is that the TDP kept going up. It became very difficult to make a single stage system strong enough yet quiet enough to run 24/7.

The recent trend from Intel in releasing extremely fast but low TDP chips has begun to make phase change (and TEC) more viable.

So what kind of insulation? LET? Dragon skin? I've got a half horse phase unit, and it is quiet enough, but didn't think 24/7 was practical... (maybe the electricity bill becomes the obstacle then?)

I'd use LET. Make sure to use a couple of thick coats and cover a much larger area than you think you need. In the VRM section, cover right up to the edges of the VRMs themselves. You basically want the thing to be waterproof anywhere that condensation has a chance at forming. Additionally, insulate (closed cell foam, paper towels, etc.) the evap head and the whole processor area. If you can make it airtight, condensation cannot form.

I've built in the rackmount format before. That was a pile of years back. Was never much fun due to there not really being a great inlet or outlet for air flow on many rackmount cases. That posed a serious issue. Other than that though, its viable, and 24/7 is viable. Normally people don't care about noise though on rackmounts at all because they go in data centers that you have to walk around with earmuffs on!
