So confused - fans and heatsinks - Page 2

Oh awesome, some optimism biggrin.gif Was hearing that the stock fan on my CPU sucks. Was looking at some 120mm ones (which are not CPU fans)? So the stock fan that comes with the CPU is 120mm?

Oh and would it fit in an average sized case (the xigmatek s123456)?

Hmm so the 'heatsink+fan' you speak of are one and the same?

Do i actually need to attach any 120mm fans to this xigmatek thing i'm getting?

toss a fan of any kind on it and you will be fine. There are better heat sinks you could have bought for the money, but with your CPU you probably won't really miss them. It isn't a bad heatsink though

I wouldn't mess around returning it...not on a Phenom 2 x4. Your temps will be fine.

Here in the US we can often buy that cooler for about $15USD on sale so it isn't top end gear is all. Still decent though

The fan that comes with the Phenom is only ~80mm or less idr. You can order some 120s or find them in store. If you want one in color I'd say Antec Tricool... you can get them in stores (Radioshack, Staples, etc). For cheaper ones I'd recommend Coolermaster R4s. Ive used both. 4 antecs, 1 has been in use for over 2 years. Both have been in vert and horizontal.

Are case fans adequate? Or are they different?

Thank you all so much tongue.gif

Case fans are usually just 3-pin and designed to blow air all over the place. Heatsink designed fans are usually 4-pin and have pwm to adjust the fan speed based on temperature. I like my Cooler Master Blademaster fans. 600-2000rpm with pwm and something like 3.90 mmH2O. For $12 or so. They work for me anyways.

I think the fan that comes with AMD CPUS are usually 70mm. The fan is mounted to the stock heatsink with 4 philips screws so it should be easy to remove the fan and zip tie to the new 120mm heatsink, but the fan sucks so don't do that. tongue.gif

Your case probably came with at least one 120mm fan, so you could use that on the Thor's Hammer. The Thor's Hammer should be able to handle a stock PII without a fan, but chances are you have a fan so use one if you got it. I'd take the fan from the front of the case if there is one there.

If you want to spend the money on another fan, I'd recommend a PWM 120mm fan, since some mobos can't control the speed of standard DC fans.
This is a decent fan, and super cheap. I'd recommend you buy 2 since they're so cheap, and they can be daisy chained.

Ohhhh...you meant the stock fan off of the stock heat sink...No you don't want to mess with that. I suppose you could use it till you got something else, but your temps will be much higher than they should be. That would be a really tiny fan for this cooler.

For fans lately I have been partial to Xigmatek...who also made that cooler. For the price point the sell at I don't think you can get much better.
