Trying a few things that will defiantly void your warranty, if not destroy your CPU

CPU 1.jpg 136k .jpg file CPU 2.jpg 161k .jpg file CPU 3.jpg 106k .jpg file CPU 4.jpg 146k .jpg file I just got done moving and figured, while everything was taken apart, why not break open my i7-3770K and apply a little squirt of Arctic Silver 5 to the little guy. Keep in mind, I am not experienced, nor is anyone I know. So with that being said, I looked up as much info as I could and gave it a try. It was easier than I thought to de-lid the proc, but cleaning the black glue was a bit of a pain. Then I thought, well since I have HS off, why not lap it. I know, I know. You’re an idiot. But I really wanted to try it, and its mine. So let’s move on. It’s a work in progress, and I’m doing it in stages, all at once. LOL. So far, this is what I got. I suppose I’ll find out how bad I f’d this sucker up when I get it back in. But I thought either this would be a good chance to show it’s not as hard as it sounds….or a “what NOT to do” guide for anyone who is considering any of the above. This will not be scientific in any way. I will not be trying to go and have the fastest proc ever. It was just plain old curiosity. Enjoy.

P.S. This is my first thread ever, so if its all wonkey, oh well.

Well, got home and put this shiny bad boy back together with a heaping helping of AS5. Plugged it into the ol' hatch back and spun her up. Then I had a heart attack. The computer didn't do anything. I forgot to plug it in. Palm to the face. Started up alright after my PCCs were done, but didn't want to auto OC for me tonight. Guess shes stull tired from the move. Figure I'll give the TIM the night to settle, then take a look at the OCing again. If its still a no go, I would say one or both of my projects was a failure. And if it works... Well we will see. At least the damn thing boots up. One for the dumb guys!

P.S. what good is "tinting" the IHS? I read it was a wise thing I do, but for the life of me, I dont see why. It seems like your "filling" in the scratches both ways to the exact same degree. Don't get me wrong, I did it, but I'm not sure why. Can some one talk real slow so I can understand why I wasted 1.50 worth of TIM?

So, did it work in the end? Lower temps? Any higher OC? Any screen shots you can share?

Unfortunatly, I did not recieve any outstanding boost to the OC or drastic temp drops. This chip was really hot and a horriable OCer which is why I did this(beyond it being a mountain that I wanteed to climb) I was looking at nearly the same temps before and after unfortuantly. I will be upgrading as soon as Intel comes out with their next BIG thing as it stands. This is not to say that it wont work for others, just not to mine. Good luck all you crazy kids.

Sorry to hear it did get the temp or OC improvments you were looking for. Seems some do, and some don't. Best wishes on your next chip being a winner! thumb.gif
