My dad is currently using it as his primary phone, and it's been working just as it has since day one. A few polishing swirls on the back from cleaning it, but the screen is virtually scratch free (now it's in an otterbox, ewwy, but his preference).
When I had to get my 4S replaced because the WiFi card died, they were incredibly surprised at how clean and maintained the phone was (not a single scratch, I made damn sure of it) and I had it in a cheap Speck case once again.
Anything can break, but my old Nokia 3310 was a trooper, I got so pissed at it, I threw it a good 30-40 yards and it still worked after that, minus being a little muddy. Then again, I got the phone free, so I really wouldn't care.
Something that's more expensive, you better believe I'll take care of it to keep it from dropping or getting damaged. It's all about the person who owns the device that determines how it's maintained.
Why is it the older the user, the bigger and uglier the case? Both my parents have otterboxes on their iphone 4... Such a waste imo... Then again i dont use any protection... Perhaps they learned a lesson i have yet to... Talking about phones here

Why does everyone on this site care so much about apple. Its an aluminum phone its going to scratch just like any other material. I don't understand why people are so anal about cracks or scratches on their devices. My iPad has several dents and scratches all over the aluminum and it is working just fine. Plastic scratches too but you guys are making way too big of a deal out of this. ITS JUST A STUPID PHONE THAT SCRATCHES JUST LIKE ANY OTHER DEVICE

Who knows, but he's replaced the god-awful rubber on it numerous times. It doesn't last very long at all. My mom on the otherhand, uses my old 3GS, with a simple case.

Just use caution, and don't slide your phone around, and it won't get scratched, simple as that. I see people toss their phones into their cars, bags, desks, etc., all the time. Then they wonder why it looks like it's been to hell and back.

It's complex tech, not ultra-durable basic function home-phone that you can swim in the pool with and hit it with a hammer.

For complexity, you sacrifice durability. For durability, you sacrifice complexity. Is there a reason behind it? Some sort of Theory or Physics Law (Technology Law 2.4, Clause B, Subsection A-F, Sub-Subsection 1-9, Sentence 84) that says we can't have both? Probably not, but companies aren't looking to do both, clearly.

Btw, anyone who thinks that law I came up with is real, you're a dunce teaching.gif

It is not only normal, its a feature! Just like "pre-stressed" jeans and those hats with the hole in them. Only the richest people can afford to buy new items that look worn.

That screen isn't defective! You got the new model that needs iVision! What, you don't know iVision? Where have you been? They are these contacts you wear which give you the holographic keyboard and a 3D animated Steve Jobs look-a-like version of Siri.

They are all the rage with the kids! Only $99.99/ pair and they ARE NOT reusable. Also, they make your pupils dilate like a crack head.

I don't want to be like most people here that hate Apple just to hate Apple, or because they think Apple is immoral in their business endeavors, but I mean let's be honest, for a company that releases 1 maybe 2 phones a year, this is kinda disappointing.
And Apple isn't immoral? Oh ok, lemme see you prove that.

So they're actually saying scratches are normal? What a joke.
