Crashing Issues with GTX 680

Thread Starter
I don't really know where else to take this as the Nvidia Forums have been down for months.

I've had some problems recently with my GTX 680, where it crashes randomly while playing heavy resource demanding games like Battlefield 3 and Borderlands 2.
There aren't any obvious patterns with the crash, as it can happen at anytime after a period of gaming.
With Battlefield, the game takes around 2GB of memory when it crashes, but with Borderlands, I've had anything in between 1GB -> 2GB

What happens is that the game freezes for a second, then the screen turns black, and it tries to check the HDMI / VGA connections for a signal. It goes on for like 3-4 seconds, then my desktop appears, with the game minimized on the tab.
I still get to hear the music currently playing when I crashed, but no sounds from supposedly actions happening around me like shooting etc.
If I try to maximize the game, nothing happens, so I have to force-exit it through the Task Manager.

I've tried looking around on the Battlelog forums, and some have found an issue with the pagefile, but only if its to small, which ain't the case here.
And I've been trying with different drivers released, including beta drivers.

Dxdiag for those who care:

My rig can be viewed in the signature.

Welp

Have you:
-put all components to stock speeds and settings
-clean install of drivers
-reset CMOS
-updated bios version
-tested CPU & ram stability with Prime95 http://download.cnet.com/Prime95/3000-2053_4-192895.html
--check operating temps on components (CPU, mobo with P95) (GPU temps while gaming)
-clean install of OS

If all those fail to fix problem then you might have to RMA card

Edit: Wait. Are you say you are hitting 2gb vram? If so decrease your MSAA. Or are you talking about ram use?

Thanks for the reply.

-put all components to stock speeds and settings - Yes
-clean install of drivers - Yes
-reset CMOS - No changes have been made in the BIOS
-updated bios version - Yes
-tested CPU & ram stability with Prime95 - Have been running a few test, but no errors so far.
-clean install of OS - I would rather not, at least not yet.

I'm talking about ram, yes, tho I guess I could try monitor vram next time I play, to check if it hit peaks when it crashes.

If you are gaming at 1920x1080 it shouldn't max vram.
Test P95 blend test for a couple hours. If no errors crashes then your ok. Dont forget @ temps during testing.

Just wanted to chime in on this. I had the exact same issues as the op, and I fixed em in different ways. For Borderlands 2, I simply turned physx to Low, and that got rid of all the desktop crashing. As for Battlefield, since I have the EVGA SC gtx 680, I underclocked it a small bit and have yet to see another crash. Anyway, hope this helps a bit man!

PhysX on low, which is basically off??? Blasphemy, lol! I refuse to play through BL2 like that! smile.gif

If you are only getting your card stable in BF3 while underclocked that means your card is not working correctly at its SC specs and needs to be RMA'd. You pay extra for the SC edition and you should not live with it running at lower clocks. EVGA warrany is great. They will give you a new card, no problems.

Welcome to OCN Bigmac!
