[TPU] JEDEC Announces Publication of DDR4 Standard

DDR4 offers a range of innovative features designed to enable high speed operation and broad applicability in a variety of applications including servers, laptops, desktop PCs and consumer products. In addition to the advantages described later in this release, the new technology has been defined with a goal of simplifying migration and enabling adoption of an industry-wide standard.

The per-pin data rate for DDR4 is specified as 1.6 giga transfers per second to an initial maximum objective of 3.2 giga transfers per second. With DDR3 exceeding its original targeted performance of 1.6 GT/s, it is likely that higher performance speed grades will be added in a future DDR4 update. Other DDR4 attributes tightly intertwined with the planned speed grades, enabling device functionality as well as application adoption, include: a pseudo open drain interface on the DQ bus, a geardown mode for 2,667 MT/s per DQ and beyond, bank group architecture, internally generated VrefDQ and improved training modes.

If you're waiting for it in general, that is one thing. It isn't going to happen on NAND flash though. Bandwidth may be a decent fraction now and SSD access times might be 100x lower than hard drives, but it's still 1000 times slower to start a transfer than mediocre DRAM. Flash isn't going to close that gap with us this far into its development cycle. It will take another technology like PCM, RRAM, or the like.

With memory becoming so fast, I really wish we could see ECC instructions on consumer chips like the i series. There was already limited overhead on ECC to begin with, by implementing this feature it would only streamline production to one type of memory, and offer better hard drive stability world wide.

If I remember correctly, the "memory wall" is a percieved problem with memory latencies failing to improve over time. Every new generation of RAM pretty much always has similar latencies to its predecessor. Meanwhile, CPU latencies have been improving over time (although they have definitely slowed as of late).

This will not alleviate the problem. At the beginning, DDR4 will likely have worse latency than DDR3. Until an entirely new type of memory surfaces, the memory wall will still exist.

What DDR4 does provide is significantly lower power consumption at the same bandwidth. Also, max bandwidth goes up substantially. Generally speaking, the bandwidth from dual channel DDR3 1333 is sufficient for software applications. However certain hardware implementations are quite bandwidth starved -- APUs being the most glaring example, and GPUs as well. I don't know what Intel and AMD plan to use to solve the APU bandwidth problem, but GPUs will definitely be using the upcoming GDDR6, which is based on DDR4.

Other than that, I don't know what DDR4 offers over DDR3 from a high level standpoint. Don't expect anything crazy in terms of performance until it works its way into GPUs or APUs. Power consumption is still going to be low as always. Cost is going to be high initially -- and rightfully so, as DDR3 is a cutthroat industry.

Still, I do believe the change from DDR3 to DDR4 is a significant one (greater than the DDR3 transition), and it's definitely something to keep a look out for over the coming year as it comes onto market and more details surface.
