XFX 6970 refrence boards corssfire watercooling

Thread Starter
Hi,

I want to water cool my 2 6970s. Both cards are XFX ref 1.0 with dual bios that have the full back plate. I need to know what is needed and the best brand plus the cost of water cooling for these particular cards. The problem is that my PCI x16 slots on my MOBO are too close and the cards reach 105 degrees Celsius under load.

Note: I am a noob to water cooling and appreciate any help I can get here.

You'll need:

- 2x EK-FC6970 waterblocks: http://www.ekwb.com/shop/blocks/vga-blocks/ati-radeon-full-cover-blocks/radeon-6xx0-series/ek-fc6970-acetal-nickel.html

Best bang for the buck is the Alphacool NexXxoS they perform well and priced right also the HeatKIller is also another one to look at .

I have 2 of the Alphacool NexXxoS 11007 for my XFX ref V1 cards . Also I would stay away from the EK junk never been a fan since my buds GFX card shorted out a couple of years a go, it was due to poor build quality which seems to be a standard for EK ..

Ek's horrid customer service aside, their gpu blocks trump Alphacools. Your Alphacool doesn't actively cool the vrms, you know right? It's even worse on the 7970s with only a small strip of copper for those vrms.

No I didn't know that . but it is by far a better card in the price/ performance range that I and most people play in.

Just because the vrm's are not being directly hit with water doesn't make it horrible .

in fact Cartago tested it and it seemed to come up pretty good ,
Quote:
GPU-Z shows in the card 4 GPU temperatures and temperature for the voltage converter,
and these are the values:

GPU Temperatures

GPU Temp. #1: 42°
GPU Temp. #2: 42°
GPU Temp. #3: 42,5°
VReg Temperatur: 61,4°

Beautiful, the cooler does exactly what he should do, he keeps the card cool. The area of the voltage converter that is really not on the condenser assembly is passed through directly, with ca.62 ° right cool.

my logic is I want the best bang for the buck so I loss a degree but I save $50 seems a fair trade, also I know with Alphacool I get a quality product that aint going to short out my card or have plating falling off..

Thanks for all the info. I have a Corsair 600T Case so should be enough space. I am going to add the costs to see if it will be worth it. Thanks again.

Fullcover blocks without active watercooling on the vrm are glorified gpu only blocks except you cannot improve the vrm cooling by adding a fan and you're limited to that specific gpu. Might as well actually get a real gpu only block, and get better temps to the core. In some situations it's not as big a deal, like on a gtx670, but those situations are pretty rare. Caymans aren't one of those.

Thanks for the info thumb.gif

glorified or not the vrm temp is 35c surfing the web and playing BL2 on high it hits 55 c and its not like the cooper doesn't make contact with the vrm's it just doesn't have water behind it .

why 6950 is out dated why buy a new water block for antique equipment that already has a water block , that would be just silly . rolleyes.gif

Zylonite don't thank him hes doing his JOB , he should be thanking you for buying his product .
