My first build!(~$1100)

Thread Starter
Hey guys!! After a lot of research I finally decided to do my first computer build!

I have been using a Dell Studio XPS 8100 for the last 2.5 years and I wanted something a little bit better so I can play all my games at high setting, but mostly because I had some money burning a hole in my pocket. biggrin.gif

I already ordered everything I need for this build. My goal was to stay around $1100 and to build a computer that will last at least 3-4 years.

Here is everything I have ordered:

CPU : Intel i7 2700K CPU -- $289.99

It was a toss up between the i5 3570K and the i7 2700K. Went with the i7 because the hyper threading might be useful in the future. For somereason the 2700K was cheaper than the 2600K on Amazon.

Motherboard : MSI P67A-GD55 -- $129.99 - $30 Rebate

Many people recommended that I go for a Z77 board, but I stuck with the P67 because I got 8 GB free RAM and the only major difference I saw way the PCI 3 upgrade which is not necessary with the GTX 660 Ti. And I saved $20

GPU : MSI GTX 660 Ti Power Edition -- $309.99 - $10 Rebate

I know that the Radeon 7950 would have been a better choice, but I was happy with my old GTX 550 Ti, so I decided to stay with Nvidia. The MSI power edition was $10 more than the standard, but it supposed to be much better at overclocking. And I got a $10 rebate so why not?
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008SBX6GI/ref=ox_ya_os_product

RAM : Team Xtreem Dark Series 16GB -- $38.99 for 8GB. I got 8GB for free with the MSI motherboard

Got this ram for free with the MSI mobo from Newegg, decided to get 8 GB more for only $39. Hopefully it works ok.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820313080

PSU : Antec NEO ECO 520C -- $54.99 - Got $10 off on Newegg

Recommended to me by a user on this forum, best PSU I have seen for the price. More than enough power for my setup.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371030

Hard Drive : Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM 1 TB -- $81.53

I had a WD Caviar Black in my old PC and it seemed very noisy to me, went with this instead. Supposed to be almost as fast as the Caviar.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005T3GRNW/ref=ox_ya_os_product

Case : NZXT Phantom 410 -- $99.99

First time I saw this case, I knew I had to get it! Looks amazing and has built in fan control.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006I2H04I/ref=ox_ya_os_product

CD/DVD Drive : Asus 24X DVD-RW Drive -- $23.10

Nothing special, just a standard drive.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0033Z2BAQ/ref=ox_ya_os_product

Heat Sink: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO : $32.08

I had the 212's little brother in my old PC(Hyper TX3) and it worked great, so I decided to get it. Best bang for the buck. I decided to go with the new EVO verison with the updated fan.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005O65JXI/ref=ox_ya_os_product

Thermal Paste : TIM-Consultants Quantum : $3+$1.65 shipping

I used this TIM in my old PC and it was amazing! I was getting better temps than Artic Silver 5 and MX-4. Best of all it's only $4.65 with shipping for a tube!
http://www.tim-consultants.com/matrix2.html

Extras:

NZXT 120mm Fan : $6.99

Decided to get another fan for the case. Not sure why but yeah.......biggrin.gif
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0039825LM/ref=ox_ya_os_product

Asus Wireless card : $21.99

The computer is going to be in my room and I can't get a ethernet cable in here unless I run 100ft of cable through our attic. Might do that later, but this is OK for now.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004ZMGBLQ/ref=ox_ya_os_product

Total cost with taxes and rebates: $1,121
Which is a lot for me, but I know some of you guys spend more than this on just a CPU!

I already ordered everything, everything is supposed to come in the next 2-3 days.

I already got the PSU today so I took some pictures with it. Sorry for the bad cell phone pics, I don't have a better camera to use right now.

Not sure why they chose to put flowers on the box:

The actual unit:

Cable specs on box:

Output specs:

Looks pretty cool to me:

You guys have any tips for me when building the computer? I have never done anything like this before, but it doesn't seem too difficult.
I will update as more parts arrive!!

The flowers on the box are to show it's eco-friendly. Y'know, it's cute and stuff. biggrin.gif

Looks like a solid build, some quick tips are make sure you wear some sort of wristband or something that discharges static electricity, or else you run the risk of frying some of your new parts. I don't want to scare you, as unless you're shuffling to ***** on carpeting while you're doing your build, you should be fine, but it's better safe than sorry, especially as a first timer. Another big rule is if it doesn't fit, don't force it. The parts should go together relatively easily, though the CPU lever will require more force than you'd probably expect. Otherwise, just go through it slowly, make sure you read the instructions of your parts beforehand (yeah yeah who reads instructions but they're extremely helpful when you've never build a computer before), and just enjoy it. Don't expect to just throw it together like a pro. Apologies if this seems like common sense but you'd be surprised how easy it is to try rushing through a build only to find out you've left the I/O plate off or something simple where if you'd have slowed down a bit, you'd have come out ahead time-wise.

The biggest part though is like I said, focus on enjoying it. If you get frustrated just walk away for a bit, you don't want to ruin yourself on building systems forever!

its a bit outdated but well though and still powerful enough for todays use, happy building and post some photo logs tongue.gif

Thanks for the heads up, I didn't think of static being a problem.

Most of the other parts needed for the build arrived today.
Only three more parts have still to come: Case, hard drive and TIM.
Case and hard drive should be here tomorrow and I should get the TIM on Friday, the cooler I got came with some, maybe Ill use it if I can't wait.

Everything I got today(sorry for the bad quality pictures, my cell phone kinda sucks and my camera is broken):

Hyper 212 Evo: This thing is huge compared to my old TX3 and the heat sink that came with the i7 CPU. Came with all needed mounting hardware+ a mount for an extra fan and some thermal paste. Anyone know how good this stuff works?

Base is a lot smoother than my old TX3, but still not completely uniform:

i7 2700k: Came nicely packaged in a small box. A really tiny heat sink was included...I hope no one uses it for overclocking.

NZXT 120mm Fan: I connected it to a 12V source to test it out and it it super quite. Cable is very nice.

MSI GTX 660 Ti Power Edition: My favorite part of the build, bigger and heavier than my old GTX 550 Ti, looks pretty cool too!

Came with two molex to 6 pin adapters and a DVI to VGA adaptor:

Four heat pipes transfer hear from the GPU to the fins.

MSI P67-GD55 Mother board: Came with 4 SATA cables a USB 3.0 bracket and a SLI bridge. Colors match with the GPU so I am happy. biggrin.gif

Heats sinks feel kinda "plasticy" maybe it's just me.

Well, that's all for now. I'll start the build tomorrow or Friday.

EDIT: DVD Drive and PCI wireless card also came today, but I didn't take any pictures.

The case, TIM, and hard drive came today!

The case looks pretty awesome!

Two questions for you guys:

I ordered an extra case fan and I don't know where I should position it.

The stock configuration is:

1 120mm fan at the front(intake)
1 120mm fan at the back(exhaust)
1 140mm fan at the top(exhaust)

I have four options for the extra 120 mm fan:

Front intake
Top exhaust
Bottom intake
Inside mount pointed at the GTX 660 Ti.

Which one would be best?

The fans are SUPER quite. Even at full speed.

Second questions: Any tips on wire organization? There are sooo many Molex and SATA plugs on the PSU and I am only going to be using one of each.

for fan configuration, takeout the top 140 put in the front intake, the front 120 put in the side panel as intake, leave the rear 120 as exhaust, the extra 120 you bought put in the bottom as intake, leave the top empty, as hot air by nature design goes up automatically.

for psu cable management, visualize first in you mind, the arrangement of cpu 4 pin location, mobo 24 pin location, gpu 6~8 pin location, tuck-in at the back of the mobo, the sata cables for optical & hdd should be arrange in a neatly passion at the back side of the side mounted hdd, the idea is that air~flow for the mobo area is without cable clutter, the extra molex. sata & pcie cable put it at the bottom hdd cage by taking out the hdd clips and leave this cable there, since you have a non modular psu, use cable tie moderately as much as velcro ties for the psu cable.
