If you can overclock the hell out of the 660TI you can get to ~168GB/s

That being said, the 670 can be overclocked to ~224GB/s

With that said though the stock 7970 is at 264GB/s

660Ti at stock 144.2 GB/s

480 at stock 177.4 GB/s

670 at stock 192.3 GB/s

at 1440p the HD 7970 is faster. the sapphire HD 7970 OC (1 Ghz) for USD 400 (380 after rebate) is a good option. good cooler. DUAL BIOS

I have encountered some games where at 8x aa and 1080p resolution my HD 7850 used around 1900MB of ram. I guess it would be better to get HD 7950 or HD 7970 for that resolution.

You simply get more for your money with the Radeons on a resolution higher than 1920x1200.

The memory bandwidth is a stronger argument than the vram for sure. If you compare stock speeds you see the gap between the 670 and 7950 close as the resolution gets higher even when the 670s vram is not saturated. That said all 4 cards (680, 670, 7950, and 7970) preform competitively at 1440p. Your not going to see the sudden frame rate drops you get from full vram with any of the cards at 2560 x 1440 (with the exception of extreme modding or 8x MSAA in MP3).

It really comes down to what kind of deals you can find. Usually the 7950 is considered the best bang for your buck assuming your will to set some decent over clocks. Personally I think the GTX 680 is too expensive when compared to the other cards and 7970 has a small lead in performance but usually costs a little bit more than the 670 and 7950. Not that this was really an AMD vs Nvidia thread

They are better now, after 3 price cuts. 6 months ago it wasn't so clear-cut, but AMD is back in their familiar price/performance lead now.
