Phenom II 940 BE Bottleneck

Thread Starter
What kind of bottleneck will this processor have if the GPU is upgraded? It's currently running a Sapphire 4870. That card is equivalent to a GTX 260.

The mobo is a GIGABYTE MA79OX-UD4P. Unfortunately it's DDR2 and the computer only has 4 gigs of ram. DDR2 is a rip off now so and I think 4GB is fine.

What do you think of the Phenom 940? I know the 965 and 955 BE have no problems with games today. The 940 is 3.0ghz stock though. I don't know how high it can be overclocked on the stock cooler.

This computer is a friends and he wants to run games like Skyrim and BF3 on high/ultra (not max aa/af).

Not that much of a bottleneck assuming he isnt getting a gtx 670 or radeon hd 7950, but as for the cpu, its the same as the others just a lower clock, get a cooler master hyper 212 plus and overclock it. Good luck! biggrin.gif

So what kind of card are we taking here?

I just paired the 7950 with a i5 3570 and it's a beast.

I was thinking about the 7950 and or the 7870.

Those two cards will get bottle necked unless you OC.

Do something like a 7770ghz or up to a 7850 if you overclock more.

How bad will the bottleneck be if I do get the 7950? That card is so solid and I want something that is going to last a while for him. Then if he decides to upgrade in the next 1-2 years he will have a great card.

The bottleneck wont be extreme, but he should upgrade to maybe piledriver though, its AMD and is going to be as cheap as bulldozer and faster.

With BF3 64 player map, my 6950 is at 100% and CPU at 3.4GHz is at about 90%. Probably about 92% CPU usage when I OC the GPU to 870 Mhz (compared to stock 800 Mhz 6950). I ran at High between 40-70 fps.

So anything slightly more powerful than a 6950/6970 may start bottlenecking unless you up the CPU more, but it won't be much of a bottleneck unless you start going crossfire/sli. 7950 would probably be a good match for this CPU.

EDIT: just played BF3, more like 80-85% CPU with a 6950 at 100% usage.

I am still running AMD Phenom ii X4 940BE and i don't suffer from any bottle necking with my GTX 580 1.5GB Skyrim and battlefield both run on Ultra.

Battlefield never goes below 35FPS and Skyrim never below 50 fps.

Its a great CPU i overclocked mine to 3.8 but it runs too hot for my liking.
