Bad contact surface = bad heat transfer. Same thing as with the tightly packed transistors, smaller die equal higher temp in ºC.
It's been done and had mediocre results...Quick google search can provide more answers.

Also, I meant without a lid.

I agree with one of the posters on that thread, I don't think there's enough SA to cover the hole of that block.

Smaller die could also mean that it's more efficient and produces less heat.

Exactly what I was saying, I don't think there's enough surface area on the die to cover the block's hole. It might end up leaking onto my other things. frown.gif

Smaller die could also mean that it's more efficient and produces less heat.

Less heat, yeah, more degree C registered by the temp sensor, also. Heat will be less but it'll be harder to dissipate.

The heat transfer would be subpar also...

Yes, it'll probably end up being around the same temperature as any other CPU because it produces less heat but also can't get rid of it fast enough.

Main reason why we use a full metal block is because it has a larger SA to spread the heat away which is what's ideal. With a half an inch SA with the DT Waterblock, it's so limited with the SA and the water will be flowing so slowly. A normal full waterblock would probably be more ideal! Although, I'm not an expert at this so it's just my theory.

Hi, just taken out my 3770k and there is literally no gap between the IHS and the PCB to get a knife in, was toying with a piece of nylon thread from an old umbrella and there wasn't enough of a gap to get that in. Is there a way to increase this gap?
