$1000 build suggestion.

post #1 of 4
Thread Starter
I have $1000 for my next custom build. I am looking for suggestions - so if anyone wants to throw some stuff together and post it on here PLEASE DO! I'm not apposed to Intel or AMD OR ATI OR NVIDIA - Although I do favor Intel at this current time - but I am waiting to see how the next AM3+ processors fair. My only requirements is the build is Micro ATX, has USB 3.0, AND has a 128GB+ SSD. I honestly would prefer that the build isn't socket 1155 since it's being replaced soooo soon.

Thanks!

Well then you just have to wait till the Haswell and Piledrivers roll out.
Your current rig seems good to me except the GPU.
So get that changed first.
Depends how much you wish to spend on a GPU out of those 1000 buck you got.
Good start would be from HD 7850 or GTX 660 (Non ti)
Yet better HD 7870 or GTX 660 Ti.
Your processor should not be bottle necking these cards. smile.gif

That'd be a problem because I no longer have that system - Lol.

AM3+ is being phased out. Haswell socket will last for 2 years maybe.

For $1000 (not including screen) I would go with an i7-3820 build. You could build a decent 1155 for $700-800 , so shelling out a hundred or so for a x79 motherboard and 2011 socket CPU isn't that bad.

i7-3820 at Microcenter = $230
http://www.microcenter.com/product/383144/Core_i7_3820_LGA_2011_Boxed_Processor
* Option to upgrade to Sandy Bridge E, Ivy Bridge E
* Caveat is unlike the K series, it isn't "unlocked" per say

i5-2500k = $160 at Microcenter, i7-2700K at MIcrocenter = $230 , i7-3770k at MIcrocenter = $290 (honestly not worth it, IMO)

Rest of PC
x79 motherboard= $200-300
--> ASRock X79 EXTREME4-M http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157283
--> ASUS Rampage IV Gene http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=MB-RAM4-GE , http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131805
CPU cooler = $30 - 70 <-- Socket 2011 has no stock heatsink, not that you want to use stock anyway
Quad channel (4x4gb) RAM = $60-80 (Gskill/Corsair LP on sale at Newegg)
DVD drive = $15-20 ($50-60 for Bluray)
GPU= $160-400 (HD 7850, HD 7870, HD 7950, GTX 670) <-- big price range here, pick your poison
256GB SSD = $150-200
650W PSU = $60-100 <-- depends if you want modular, 80 Plus Silver/Gold , etc.
Case = $60-120 <-- depends on you
Fans = ~$10 each

$965 before tax/shipping - $1,490 with Bluray
