[KitGuru] Intel Haswell introduces new power requirement for 1150

Wikipedia is ‘lite’ on info about boards based on this new socket, but KitGuru is hearing that an 8-pin connector may no longer be needed. It could be that the new boards will use a 6-pin or even less. This kind of change, if the information is accurate, will pose no problem to quality PSU brands like Seasonic, Cooler Master, Antec and Be Quiet – because of the modular nature of their designs – but anyone with a cheap-n-nasty supply might have issues.

Just a rumour, I couldn't find any confirmation of it. But I am ready to prepare a new custom cable for my PSU when Haswell comes out. I just wonder how PSU manufacturers will react to this, if it will turn out to be true.

Jesus I hope they don't make a unique "6 Pin" that they plan to replace the ATX12V plugs. As these processors are consuming less power 4 pins will be more than enough even for overclockers. 4 pins deliver about 150W, 8 pin 300W. What will 6 pin deliver? 225W? If it works with 8 pin plugs - Fine - but if it's a new standard..No thanks.

I don't see what the big issue is, all you will need is an 8 pin to 6 pin adapter that will be worth like $2 or included with the psu/cpu/mobo.

Users shouldn't be scared, 8pin to 6 or 4 pin conversions will work just fine. And those with modular power supplies can easily replace the cables. The 8pin standard will require several more years to be changed.

Not a big deal if converters are available for cheap, and given that space on motherboards is at a premium given all the features that are crammed in nowadays, but I wonder if it is really necessary. From the Core 2 Quad days we used to have 4 pin connectors, and that worked just fine, and it should continue to do fine on the mainstream segment. Perhaps 6-pin is for the new high-end instead of 8-pin ? Or maybe it is a new standard for all segments ? Not a bad thing to see power consumption go down in general, but I wonder how that will limit progression on the high-end. 8 - 10 core Intel CPUs with powerful IGPs?
