EDIT: or maybe thats not called in place, but I know thats what happens if you hit custom and just install over top of an existing install.

I don't -think- that is inplace. I remember seing an article about it being pretty hidden away in Windows 7. The in-place install is sort of like a full reinstall but it only affects the OS. I have no clue how to invoke it though, but a little googling would probably do justice. From the way I took it, in-place worked like generalization. It cuts the operating system's ties to all third party drivers and software, replaces all core OS files and leaves everything else intact. Or something like that. Sadly OP can't use generalization without actually being able to boot to at least command prompt mad.gif

I don't think so, you need the OS that you're going to generalize. Unless you go read a whole damn ton about how to use DISM on an offline image, which would work to the same affect as "sysprep /generalize /reboot". But that is the on the edge of the amount of skills required to deploy your own OEM Windows image, haha.

Might be a bit off topic but I love making little bootable mini Windows 7 recovery usb's using Windows Automated Installation Kit 3 that allows you to modify the Windows Preinstallation Environment 3.0

Oh I know all about WAIK. Though I have never used it to modify WinPE/WinRE. Mainly used it to streamline my Windows customization process, because it takes me forever. Makes all my junction points, moves stuff, serials itself, creates user accounts all that fun stuff. thumb.gif

For recovery I use a "modified rolleyes.gif" Hiren's BootCD with a few variants of mini Windows (PE modifications with custom shells), and Ubuntu.
EDIT: just to clarify, no I didn't build those mini windows'.. They came full of win, ha.

They work like hard-coded shortcuts. It's a link to a folder that functions as an alias of the folder you point it to. For example, I always move %WINDIR%\SoftwareDistribution, but moving this causes problems with Windows Update, obviously. So, you create a junction point in its place, that points to where you moved it. Windows itself doesn't see the shortcut as a shortcut, but rather, as the original directory. These are handled within the NTFS filesystem itself.

Windows also has Symlinks, as to most users, you don't really see or use them. But if you use Linux or Unix any good deal, you realize that they are pretty much built on symbolic link directories/files, as is Windows. The %WINDIR%\WinSxS folder, that is Windows resource cache for everything- is primarly a massive collection of Symlinks. Hah.
