4GB SLI vs Tri/Quad SLI

Hi, this is my first post here, just wanted to say thanks to the community for helping me so much with my build choices along the way. I have most of my items picked out, but I'm still going back and forth on a few things, one of them being the graphics cards.

I was originally considering buying a GTX690, but due to only having 2GB Vram per GPU, I held off. I am considering going the 4GB versions of the 670 or 680, and considering running in SLI, or Tri/Quad SLI.

I have heard that if a person wants to run 4GB cards in SLI, they really won't see the benefit of the 4GB ram without going to a Tri-SLI or Quad SLI setup. I searched around, but could not find out the reason for this. Can anyone help me understand this a little better?

Here is what I am planning for my setup:

Switch 810 case
Seasonic X-1250 PSU
Asus P9X79 WS mobo
Intel 3930K w/ indigo extreme thermal interface
2 x Samsung 830 SSD 256GB in Raid0 + 2x 128gb corsair force gt SSD for extra storage/backup
32GB Samsung 30nm DDR3 Ram
420mm Black Ice SR1 rad + XSPC RX 240 rad w/ d5 vario, gpu blocks (xspc), Raystorm cpu block, cougar 140mm and Skythe GT 120mm fans for rads in push pull.
Not sure about the tubing yet, as I've been reading about plasticizer issues on the Primoflex lrt, any input would be appreciated.

What's your goal? What games do you play. Don't weigh others opinions on your decision.

The reason to go 4gb is for triple screen/surround. There's no need to go 4gb unless you are pushing a lot of pixels. SLI 670/680 are pretty damn fast unlocked.

I want to be able to play any game at any resolution I want. If I want to play Skyrim or Crysis, WoW, etc, on max settings at max framerate on 3 screens, I want to be able to do it. I want the option.

For 3 screens more VRAM will help.

please be more specific

3 x 1080p monitors = 2gb is more than enough SLI 670/680

3 x 1440p monitors = 2gb is more than enough SLI 670/680

3 x 1600p monitors = 4b SLI 670/680

There is no need to ever go Tri/Quad SLI nowadays. The drivers aren't mature enough and usually the third/fourth card is only using very minimum gpu %

With that in mind, the x79 chipset isn't needed, 32 gb of ram... that a bit too much unless you are professional video rendering/photo editing.

Power supply is over kill, even 4 x 680s in quad SLI only pushes less than 1000w.

Right i see, but even on a single monitor @ 1920x1200 my Vram was maxed playing Crysis 1 with a few mods, same for Skyrim....Vram maxed on single monitor.
Now we are talking 3 monitors, so are you still sure about that?

the Keplar series handles Vram MUCH better than the previous generations. Also, once the texture is loaded, it's not like it needs to be loaded 3 times for 3 different monitors. Jst because it says you're maxing the Vram, doesn't mean your'e ACTUALLY maxing it. It's just reserving that much for the game.

Considering the rest of your system is overkill, you might as well get the 4gig models

I'd HIGHLY suggest you get either the 670 FTW 4gig models of 680 FTW 4 gig models. They suck air from inside the case and blow it out the back. Really good for SLI. I've also had really good luck with overclocking these
