2.0 / 2.1 setup: SPDIF versus sound card?

I'm going to be getting a stereo amplifier and setting up a 2.0 or 2.1 with a pair of Kef Q300 bookshelf speakers for close-field listening.

I'm wondering if SPDIF to the stereo amp is going to be just fine (my mobo has spdif out)... or if I should take any alternate choice into consideration with a sound card or anything else at all?

amps don't have DACs; pre-amps and processors do.

I'm assuming you're using a receiver instead of a straight amp, so I would use the spdif out or consider dac.
