Anyone here prefer smaller monitors?

I'm pretty sure most of you won't agree with this, but I've found that I prefer a smaller monitor over a larger one.

I've used a 23 inch 120hz monitor for almost 2 years but recently switched to an 18.5 inch with 1366x768 res.

I really prefer it and I feel like I have a lot less strain on my eyes. And, while it may seem silly to have a GTX 670 on such a small resolution, I get the bonus of always being able to use vsync in every single game I play without the possibility of any kind of stuttering or screen tear.

I guess it depends on what you do.

I'm a web designer/programmer and the more screen real estate, the better. I don't think I could ever design and build a website with a 1366x768 resolution. I use a 1920x1200 monitor as my primary and a 1920x1080 monitor as my secondary however I could easily benefit from having another monitor.

I sold my 24" 1200p and downgraded to a 21.5" 1080p because I felt it is better for starcraft. I don't know if I would want to go any smaller then 1080 though.

within reason, I wouldn't want any larger than a 30'' for a desktop but no smaller than a 22''

Define smaller.

I like 21.5" 1080p more than the larger sizes—though 1200p would be preferred. Unless your desk is large and you just push the monitor way back (then what's the point unless you're looking at 27"+ monitors with 1440p+ resolutions, but then the text at 100% scaling would be small), the wider field of view can be too much for certain tasks in my opinion, often so for certain games too.

For gaming, a smaller resolution is fine. High-res gaming is overrated IMHO; actually, make that realism, graphics details, etc. in general (how good it looks is about the overall design, environments, style... not the technical prowess), and graphics are a secondary or tertiary concern anyway. However, for any kind of work or even web browsing, I would be really annoyed by anything like 768 vertical pixels, with 900 being marginal.

Anyway, is it strain on the eyes or on the neck? Or I suppose it's strain on your eyes if you're not using your neck. thinking.gif

I use two 21.5'' 1080p monitors. I had one 24'' 1080p before hand, and it just didn't look right. 

 

I guess what I'm saying is, PPI is a big deal for me. The smaller monitors with the high resolutions make me much more happy than a large display.

Less eye strain because your eyes are focusing on a smaller target? On screen movement not as pronounced?

Also, how far are you sitting from your monitor? If you can lick the screen from your normal sitting position, then yes a bigger screen is going to be more strain. I use 2 x 26" (ok, 25.5 if you break out the tape) @ 1200p.... I could not imagine anything smaller than 1080p on a 23/24". My viewing range is about 2 feet.

Now I worked with a dude who liked his 20" monitor (what we had at work at the time) about 6 inches from his face. Drove me nuts. I don't need to see individual pixels.

My monitor is only about 2 feet away from my face, so I guess that's why it strains my eyes.

Why would it straight your eyes ? That makes no sense. Any distance should not matter unless your brightness is to high.
