Is my HDD defective?

Thread Starter
I just bought a brand new WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200 RPM to go in my build.

Everything seems fine so far, except that I'm noticing a noise from the hard drive. It's sort of like a very faint "fluttering" which lasts about five seconds with three seconds in between. It's very consistent.

I am just wondering is this normal behavior/sound for the hard drive? I have always had rather loud computers, and this one is virtually silent, so I'm wondering if I'm just hearing the normal operation of the HDD for the first time in my life?

That said, what would be the explanation of this behavior? I am not even doing anything like writing data to the HDD or anything like that, and it still makes this noise. The HDD isn't even my OS device -- I have an SSD for that. The HDD is simply being used as a storage device.

So, should I be worried, or could this just be normal operation noises that I'm not used to hearing? I can hear it from about three feet away with the computer at head level on the desk in front of me, but it's very quiet in the room.

If you're worried about the drive, do a block test on it with HDTune or HDDScan, and also check out the SMART information tables.

That said, I use a pair of WD Blacks in my build and with the fans turned way down, the sounds that they make are quite noticible. Especially during boot, where it's more of a constant whine for about 15 seconds. So far they have held up well, but there is one thing to note. Make sure that you have them securely attached to your case and that there isn't something causing them to vibrate. WD drives have an anti-vibration mechanism that will cause "fluttering" noises due to changes in the rotation speed of the platters. If their SMART tables are good, and the block test is good, but their performance is bad, try them outside of the case on a book or something similar.

Some wd's are just loud. I would download their test app off their site and run it. That would be the fastest and easiest way to tell. Thanks

Before doing any testing and while the drive is still accessible (if you think it is failing), back the data off. A surface scan can kill the drive. Grab HDTune and post the health page here (screen shot it).

Also, can you record the sound it is making? I want to here it. If I hear it, I can definitely tell you if there is an issue or not.

Here's a video and you can hear it if you listen closely with the volume up. Sorry for the background noise -- this is the best I could do right now but I could probably make a better recording later.

In this video, you can hear what sounds like normal read/write sounds every now and then, but you can also hear the "fluttering", as I call it. It's very consistent and happens pretty much every eight seconds. The fluttering sounds lasts for around five seconds with three seconds of silence in between.

And screenshots from HDTune:

Yeah there is something going on there. From what I can tell, the heads are "fluttering" acorss the disk because they are having issues finding data. Back your data off and get the drive replaced. It is failing.

If you can, make a video with all the fans off in your system (or put on low) with no TV and have your camera as close to the drive as you can (side panel off).

Ok, I just realized that it wasn't my HDD causing the noise -- it was the front fan : /

That said, do you really think something is wrong with my HDD? Based on what, the HDTune test?
Well if you're 100% sure that it's a fan causing the noise- your drive is fine.

HDTune bench and SMART both look decent. Just about the same as my drives.

Ok, you guys were scaring me! I just compared my screenshot to the screenshot on HDTune's front page, and they look nearly identical (though, they may be picturing a failing drive for all I know).

Sorry for the false alarm! Noobish of me
