An artificially intelligent virtual gamer created by computer scientists at The University of Texas at Austin has won the BotPrize by convincing a panel of judges that it was more human-like than half the humans it competed against.

The competition was sponsored by 2K Games and was set inside the virtual world of "Unreal Tournament 2004," a first-person shooter video game. The winners were announced this month at the IEEE Conference on Computational Intelligence and Games.

"The idea is to evaluate how we can make game bots, which are nonplayer characters (NPCs) controlled by AI algorithms, appear as human as possible," said Risto Miikkulainen, professor of computer science in the College of Natural Sciences. Miikkulainen created the bot, called the UT^2 game bot, with doctoral students Jacob Schrum and Igor Karpov.

Whats the adaptability of these AI. If we set them up in an online scenario where players can continuously play the game and continue to tag these AI, can they learn what it was they did before being tagged while compensating for the few that tag every enemy they see?

That's pretty darn good. I remember reading about evolutionary algorithms showing promising results for AI research in video games, several years ago.

This is great progress. I can't wait until in-game bots all pass as humans, it will make single-player games so much better IMO, more difficult, but not in an unfair way.

Building a human-like AI is insanely difficult though. Just the amount of work that must be done to analyze the environment of the maps to give the AI the information it needs to be able to navigate in any way a human could is difficult. Then once navigation is solved it needs to do things like anticipate your actions, and make smart choices about how it can survive, for example is finding more health a higher priority than going after you, or should it throw a grenade rather than shoot, where should it throw the grenade, should it switch weapons, should it crouch or go prone, etc.

Making a life-like AI becomes much more difficult when you give it more options as well, so often AI are just given very few choices on anything. Can AI pick up health or other weapons in most games? No. Can they follow you anywhere in the map? Not in a lot of games. Do they have more than one primary weapon to choose from? Usually not. Will they do more than just crouch behind something to recover? Not very often, they could do stuff like crouch and then move around where you can't see them so they could flank you.

Sorry for the long story, video game AI is one of my favorite game programming subjects. So yea, excited for better AI in the future.
