I'm just about to build a new PC with an MSI Z77 Mpower board and thought I might as well use 16GB, so I bought a Corsair Vengeance LP 4x4GB kit. However, as I do a bit of research I find that using all four ram slots will affect overclocking ability and may cause the memory to be a little slower. Since I don't do a lot of multi-tasking and this is basically a gaming PC, would it be better to use only 2 of the sticks and 8GB and not slow the system for extra memory I don't need? Or am I just over-thinking this, and I should install the 4x4GB and forget about it.
The additional memory only affects memory overclocking and BLCK overclocking (I think). Using the CPU multiplier to overclock, which is virtually the universal method for overclocking, will not affect the overclock or memory.
The more sticks of memory you have, the more stress it puts on the memory controller, so it'll be harder to stabilize an overclock for all four DIMMs.
If I were you, I'd ignore it. Just install all of them.
It only makes a difference once you start going for max overclocks. You'd probably be limited by your cooling solution before this point.
