My outfit does not defend anything. After we take a base, we move on to the next one, because of the way bases are set up defense is neither fun nor rewarding of XP/resources.

We usually roll with 3 squads in TeamSpeak (custom channels and rules are better for organization of groups larger than a single squad compared to the in-game VOIP):
12 tanks
11 infantry and a driver in a respawn-equiped Sunderer (APC) that stays with and supports the tanks
11 infantry and a pilot in a Galaxy (air transport) that hot drop on the opposite side of a facility from where our armor is approaching from (so the enemy has to deal with them first and turn their backs to the approaching tanks)

The only good fights we get are at The Crown. Everything else just gets steamrolled, and even winning The Crown is inevitable but it hurts more and takes longer.

In a way, it's interesting to play within this new (to Planetside) paradigm of mechanized combined arms maneuver warfare. A platoon of infantry, armor, and air units sitting in a field with no cover are better defended than the same players trying to hold a fortress. For a little while, it's fun to be part of that force that rolls through lightly defended areas, and rolls around vastly superior numbers, getting a high K/D and taking lots of territory at the same time. But the metagame is not yet ready for that style of play. It's like all 3 factions are Mujahedin who rely on maneuver and hit-and-run, while the rules of the game require all 3 factions to hold territory like NATO - but we don't have the tools to fight that way.

One thing I do like that's been kept the same from Planetside 1, is that the only people who use Galaxies are bad***es. A single squad dropped into the middle of hundred(s) of enemies, who are then expected to survive long enough and inflict enough damage that ground-based reinforcements can roll in and set up a respawn point before they are wiped out. Random zerglings don't get into Galaxies, and there are plenty of posts on the SOE forums wondering why that vehicle is even in the game because it seems useless to them.

Alright so I just read this entire thread and am really excited now about this game. Is the $40 Alpha pack still available and do you get for sure beta access if you purchse it? If so I will be in game tonight playing. smile.gif

Loving the game, definitely needs to be optimized. Looks great so far, I do not however think it will be ready for the November 20th release date. As for those of you guys who are a little hesitant or regretful of your alpha pack purchase just give the game a chance. You really need to get in a good outfit or hit the insert button to get put into a squad for quick action. If OCN does not get a good crew running, might I suggest the 666th Devil Dogs.

Great group of people, organized and one of if not thee biggest in Planetside 2.

I bought the Alpha Squad pack, played some of the beta. I liked it well enough, the problem is the terrible optimization. It ran very poorly on my rig, even with settings turned down. If they can optimize it better, I'll be happy, I do enjoy the game, when it runs decently, and unfortunately, that's not during big battles. It runs ok in small skirmishes, but honestly that's boring, I can't go to where the major action is because the framerate just tanks badly.

Turn your draw distance down if you aren't piloting or driving anything. The game has a huge distance of visible terrain.

Based on tweets from the devs, it seems they are adamant about releasing with broken mechanics and no metagame. Maybe a year or two after release they'll realize all the stuff their beta testers are telling them is broken is actually broken and fix it, but not before the game gets a bad rep and permanently loses new players. For now, it is slow, shallow, and repetitive, and the CEO of SOE has explicitly stated that's the way it's intended to be.

"metagame" kills creativity in a game. Watching games with serious metagame components is like watching an ant farm. Keep wishing for a larger BF3, I'll be finding a decent outfit after release with plenty of PS1 players who know how to enjoy a game of this type. Every squad I've jumped in that had at least 1 or 2 other players with an iota of creativity has made for an awesome night of gaming.

As far as broken mechanics goes, I'd like to see them release statistics. Vast majority of the stuff people complain about is just fine, and they only have a few minor changes to make. Players are just whiny as usual because there is no definitive OP setup that they can all flock to to feed their K/D addiction.

A large BF3 map is exactly what PS2 is right now, and that's the problem. PS2 is just a cheap BF3/CoD knockoff, rather than the complex, thoughtful game it could be . . . and both those games are better at being themselves than PS2 is at imitating them.

I'll admit I don't play BF3, but I haven't seen many videos on youtube showing outfits of 50+ players grabbing 4-5 dropships and start bunny hopping across the map, pushing everybody out of their way and doing as they please until some other outfit throws the word around, gets some bodies online, and puts a stop to it. Are you even playing with anyone remotely organized, or are you just logging in and hitting the instant action button? Because that's about as exciting as throwing a Slim Jim into light traffic. And it's that way for a reason.
