I agree; this game only truely shines (IMO) when you get together with a group of people that are organized and working together. I feel the same way when I play BF3, but to a lesser extent. I can still have some fun by myself because there are far fewer people, and a single person can be effective at times. In PS2, that's not really possible. It is however possible to be effective even in a group as small as a single squad if people take the right classes and vehicles and use them effectively. I think PS2 is fairly deep as far as the game as a whole goes. You need to have the right certs/classes to get things done. If you play this as a lone wolf game, it gets very boring very fast. It has a lot of the same mechanics as PS1 and the more I play it, the more it feels like a good sequel to the first, and I have hundreds of hours and almost 2 years into the first game when it was released.

I always have fun playing BF3 but you really can't have fun playing PS2 without a squad IMO.

I think when they change up the "metagame" and make certain type of facilitiys worth something things should be different. Game is free, it will be fun. SoE can take this game very far I think if they do it right and not worry too much about milking customers and instead optimize, and create great gameplay.

If you're leading the squad it's all about knowing what you can do with what you've got. There's always something that you can be effective at somewhere on the map, so I guess that involves a little knowledge about the bases too. The fact that you don't have to cert into buying vehicles means that the odd couple out can always find some way to be useful.

When the game servers are busy, (I play on the WEST coast server) I see people with 4 galaxies (or whatever you want to call the big drop ship) at a time carrying people to base stations or front lines of battle. Passengers equip the jetpack, board the aircraft, and the driver takes then to the front line and drops them into action. They use the jetpack to cushion their fall, and the pilot in the galaxy either flies back to base, or if he gets blown up, at least he dropped his payload and can wait a few minutes to spawn another galaxy. But it's good to be a skilled pilot in the game so that you don't waste your aircraft. In the event that you cannot spawn a vehicle, you can catch a ride on another galaxy headed to the front line and play as a grunt for a while, so that you can wait to spawn another aircraft/tank etc. IMO, I think the idea of the game is ok, kinda fun actually since you get to fly etc. If you like to fly, this is a game for you.

About the optimization, they REALLY need to get in gear. You guys are having trouble on your 6870's, even in crossfire, and I thought I didn't have enough power. xD (refer to sigrig) Since my 6770 is just below high end, it shouldnt have that much of a problem, but it is slow on low. And I despise that. I actually can get decent frame rates when its close to crap, but it leaves ALOT to be desired to increase the quality. Also, could someone elaborate on view distance? I cant seem to find an option to turn it down. Adjusting "Render Quality" (AKA Anti-Aliasing & Anisotropy) helps, (I want AA & aniso to be independent. mad.gif ) but it still looks like crap if you get it below 25% render quality.

Oh thanks, i'll give that a try.

BUT Update is here! http://forums.station.sony.com/ps2/index.php?threads/update-notes-10-25-2012.36675/
They've fixed the TERRIBLE anti-team-kill system so that you dont get weapons lock if you accidentally shoot someone. you WILL get weapon lock if you keep killing on purpose, though.

They've also optimized the graphics

I can't wait to try it out. It's updating now. about 1GB to download for update.

I won't get to test out the new patch 'till this evening, but hopefully there's some improvement. I haven't noticed anything drastic with the previous performance optimizations.

You've got a similar system so it should give me a decent idea of whether or not it'll help much.

Thanks

WOW guys. This is a DRASTIC improvement. I can have it on high with motionblur and it is very smooth! I haven't tested the anti team kill stuff, cuz, why would i shoot my team mates on purpose? tongue.gif

But you will be VERY happy with the graphics optimization.
