3) Take a look into enabling ultra settings (go back a few pages) or turning on PhysX. With Ultra settings/PhysX on I get 45-60FPS and 99% GPU usage. The ultra settings let the game offload more to the graphics cards and improves performance on high end PCs. The game is very CPU heavy simply because of the scale of it.

Thanks guys

I will look into the Ultra settings as well, but it seems the game or Nvidia needs to come up with much better drivers.

The scale of the game is amazing and although I am not a fan of F2P games because they are usually not AAA titles, I liked Planetside 2 and want to get more into it.

I really hope to find a nice bunch of people from OCN which plays the game on European servers.

Press ALT+F in game to bring up the FPS monitor in the bottom left, you'll find that under medium/high settings it's almost always CPU bound. Drivers can't fix that.

Thanks... I checked it out inside the warpgate and was getting 78-80 fps (GPU), Medium Crown fight was getting 70-80 fps (GPU). In certain areas where there was a lot of peeps and tanks fell back to 68-70.

Setting High. Briggs server.

When it said xx (GPU), does that mean the GPU is bottlenecking?

Yes.

Also, that will be amazing for defending a point. They'll still be easy pray to anything that can get a line of fire on them (like a light assault), but a well placed turret will do a lot of damage if you can keep them defended. (Hey, just like an AA max or a line of heavies that need resupply).

yeah but why can't a i5 3570k @ 4.4 can't handle the game than like this?

I mean what kind of a CPU do people need for this game?

Re GPU... hmmm I might have a play with the clocks again. Its currently sitting on 925 / 1850 Mhz.

But tbh, it plays well enough for me.

Re AV Mana turrets. They look fun but I suspect a well placed HEAT / HE round would bring the engi operating it, a world of pain.

Just one more thing us tankers have to worry about... tank mines, C4, lock on rockets, other tanks and now AV manas... never a dull moment tongue.gif

Using in-game options my i7 2600k @4.6 (hyperthreading ON) is the bottleneck for my 570 in the 35-50 fps range. With Ultra settings, I get 40-55fps and am GPU bound. Just the way the game tracks individual players is very CPU intensive when there's so many. We'll see if this new far-render tech they're testing on a couple servers does anything to improve that.

Am I missing something in this post? No screenshots, no links, no videos, and nothing in a direct comparison using Planetside 2.

I'm not saying that different architectures don't perform better than others even with less L3, I'm saying that it's very much on a case-by-case basis, game-by-game basis. This is a pretty standard, common agreement among the community, or am I wrong? I mean, I can't recall how many times I've seen conversations along the line of "Oh I have X and this game runs great, so if you have Y it should run even better." "Nope. Just ran a couple hours, I seem to get the same frames, even 5 or 10 lower in some places." Or "Well if I'm getting X amount of frames with this, you should be getting Y. " and the reply is "Nope. I'm actually getting Z."

Bench all you want, games are not coded to a standard. Simple as that. If they were, we'd never have a buggy release, never have poor optimization which I'm sure everyone in this thread is keenly familiar with, and never have to deal with poor design decisions such as no key remapping or no graphics options. I have pored over the system specs, game settings and results of probably over 100 PS2 players since closed beta just out of sheer curiosity of how I measure up. They make no freaking sense. None of it. Any claim otherwise is laughable when you've got this conglomeration of statistics. The only thing I can't rule out as having an effect, big or small, is processor cache. The reason that I can't rule it out is because nowhere have I found a straight comparison of it in Planetside 2. On a small or large scale of difference.

Basically what I'm saying is this: You can almost never predict this sort of thing. It all comes down to hands-on trial and error. If it didn't, in-game FPS counters, GPU and CPU monitors would be a very extreme novelty used by reviewers, testers, and big hardware afficionados. The rest of us would be able to rely on their opinion completely instead of having to constantly confirm our own results with these tools (at least once all of the OCing is done wink.gif ).

You are wrong, but primarily because you are seeing arch differences where there are none.

1) Sandy-bridge generation Xeons are the same arch as their consumer level parts.
2) Llano is the same arch as Ph II
3) Trinity is the same arch as PD

Where you are getting this mystical "different acrh" argument I don't know, but it's wrong. Xeons are Core. Opterons are FX. They have a bit more cache, more cores, more memory channels, and more QPI/HT links, and more features (they get some fun toys to assist in things like virtualization and monitoring) but the core design is the same.

The other part is that, go figure, if a CPU is fast enough, it can just straight up brute force it. A 5Ghz 2500k will rip a 4Ghz 3570k a new one all day long in SC2, that's just how it works.

Now the fun part, is you're arguing that a same-arch Xeon will out-preform a much faster clocked consumer CPU in a game that can not use more then 4 cores to their full potential. No, it does not work that way, and it never will.

When you are comparing 2 things of the same design, you can always predict this sort of thing. While you would be right if they were actually different archs, they are not.
