Official OCN Planetside 2 Thread

Planetside 2 is F2P Sci-FI MMORPG Style Shooter. Persistent Worlds, means everything matters for your empire!

download link - http://www.planetside2.com/

The three empires are
Terran Republic
New Conglomerate
Vanu Sovereignity.

Each faction has its own distinct differences, NC weapons are the strongest for damage per bullet, vanu are amazingly accurate at medium distances with the least amount of recoil while TR weapons are all around very balanced. Some differences are also apparent in some of the flying and tank vehicles.

Yep, will probably be in beta for a few more months. The final product will be amazing and a work in progress still. They have plans to add on to the game over the next several years...

LOVE Planetside 2. What servers/coasts do people play on? I'm East Coast and typically play TR.

Any Planetside 1 Vets here? Played it for several years and I see myself doing the same with Planetside 2.

The game's graphics/lighting/look and feel are so sexy. It's very CPU intensive, something that would peak an over clocker's interest...

RIght now I can't tell if its gpu or cpu intensive, my gpu is always at 99% but usually I have SLI GTX 560 ti's one of them is being RMA'd right now. My cpu temps never really get high, 60c on 1.33volts but I never put my h100 fans past 60% on my fan controller

I play on West servers as VS atm.

I played PS1 from '03-'05. I lived and breathed that game. PS2 can be a lot of fun when you get a group of people that actually work together. If not, it gets boring fast for me.

If anyone wants to play, feel free to add me on steam; ID: Maddhamster

Well, I figure it's more CPU intensive because when I'm in the middle HUGE battle with hundreds of people fighting over one small area with stuff blowing up everywhere, my frames will drop to ~30 and my GPU usage will still be less than 100%. Don't you think my GPU usage would be 100% or atleast like 98% if it was GPU dependant? I have a single 680 GTX with an an Intel 3770K overclocked to 4.8GHZ.

I think its definitely not fully optimized by the drivers or it is highly CPU dependent. I wouldn't be surprised if it was very CPU dependent though.

When SoE designed the engine for Everquest 2 at the time processors were increasing exponentially in speeds, but not in cores. They built the engine so that it would take a few years until games would max it out because they thought 4ghz+ non overclocked processors would come out, of course we know they didn't and instead we have dual core processors. Basically it took until around 2008 until people even had the systems to run these games at high or ultra settings when they finally re worked the engine and enabled dual core support because it was so heavily CPU dependent.

It did look amazing though (watch 1080p not bad for a 2004 game)

I also get 40-60 fps roaming around but as soon as im near a lot of action its like 30 fps and stays there. Same thing in GW2, kinda disheartening because its harder to aim when u get those huge FPS drops.

I lost access to my old SoE account where I played the original PlanetSide. The system won't let me log on or reset my password so whatever...
My new account will not receive a Beta invite so I can't be arsed. I have no time to sit on Twitter and wait for a key. I'll wait for final release, whenever that is.

You aren't given any priority if you played orginal planetside, its just based on how long ago you applied.

I am trying to get better at flying the mosquito/reaver but its tough.. people dogfight much better than me even when i fly very high and wait for the best times.

Sniping as NC is too easy also if you like sniping in bf3, headshot = one shot kill only with the NC bolt driver rifle.

Twitter. And as far as sitting around, haven't seen many people getting ignored. Some of the people giving out keys on the account will want you to work for it, like photoshopping a screenshot or something, but it's typically ask and you shall receive.

If you plan on playing it anyways, and plan on spending money on it, just go ahead and buy the alpha squad pack. Perks + $40 in game cash waiting for you when the game goes live. $40 is going to last me a long time in the cash shop.

If you guys want it bad enough then support the developer and pay $40 for the alpha squad. You get $40 of in game credit once the game comes out, so that alone pays for itself. Then you get all the exclusive skins and weapons, into the beta, and 6 months 10% xp booster.

I bought alpha as soon as they made it available. I'm usually really against stuff like this (bf3 premium, etc) but it's a f2p game. So I think it's the least I can do to pay $40 for their work. It's worth having access to the beta for months, along with all the other goodies that again do more than just pay for themselves.

If you really do appreciate planetside and haven't gotten into the beta yet I don't see how you couldn't have purchased alpha yet. Being that cheap to a dev that is bringing us such a epicly awesome game is getting pretty close to straight up pirating a game imo

Here is some work from my outfit, 92nd...

Outlawed your video is making me want to buy into the beta for 40 bucks.

This looks like it is everything I wanted BF3 to be, but was not.

Real teamwork! Real communication! Large Scale! w00t

#19 ·
Pretty much. Teamwork is much more of a must with this game with the way they have set up the certs and weapons you can buy. It's all a trade-off instead of being a super-vehicle or super-soldier.

When you work with a group that uses teamwork, and you're all fighting over the same base, it's an absoutely amazing (and quite hectic) experience.

Well, you convinced me to go for Alpha Squad. Problem is the system won't allow me to pay. It keeps saying there's an error processing the payment. I've tried both, using my PayPal account and using my credit card, both of which I know to be working perfectly (given very recent online purchases with both). I guess they don't want my money!

EDIT: Done, finally! I had to create a new SoE account because the one I was using was registered to the UK, not Gibraltar (where I live now). However, PayPal and MasterCard credit card payments still failed. Luckily my Visa debit card went through ok. Funnily enough, Gibraltar is set to pay in USD when here we use GBP. I therefore paid $39.99, which to me is currently ÂŁ24.88. People in the UK have to pay ÂŁ29.99. WIN!

That would disappoint me to be honest. I hope it can be different/edited.
Well, atm you can create a character and name it whatever. As far as I know, your sign in name won't be your soldier name in game.

Yes sir! I have loved the battlefield series since 1942 but honestly this game is everything battlefield wishes it could be. Like I said you get more than compensated for your $ spent on alpha squad, plus you get to start playing the game asap! The beta will probably be around until close to launch and launch prob won't be until December or so.

All in all, there really is nothing to compare to the massive amount of infantry and vehicle warfare that can go down in one spot in this game. A fleet of 50 tanks and 50 aircraft within half of a square mile or so is not unheard of.

If you do pick it up and want to play with some team work like that, let me know. Our outfit is always down for new recruits that understand the importance of team work and simply put, aren't stupid as hell

Congratulations!! I would say I will see you on the battlefield but I guess you will be in a European server.

Yea what reloaded said. It's just like a mmo in that aspect. You have a log in username but that's not linked to your character or "toon" names.

I gotta say if you are playing the beta at prime time (6est through 12am EST) there is some serious fun action going on every single night!

I am a personal HUGE battlefield 2/3 and 2142 fan but those games simply have no teamwork compared to planetside 2.

In BF3 a good player can easily get a few kills and possibly plant a MCOM/take/defend a flag. In planetside 2 there is no way you are taking a defended base alone ever. You could possibly take a control point or two, but some of the main battle basses require you to take 3-4 control points and then hold them all while you gain influence for 1-3 minutes before its capped.

The voice communication is garbage in BF3, I believe if you want to use VC then you must set it up in battlelog.

In Planetside 2 you log in and if you have a mic plugged in and its detected in windows audio it will auto detect the mic and allow you to speak. There are separate voice channels for everything going on. Voice chat for squad, platoon (multiple squads fighting as one), outfit (what most mmo's call a guild or clan), and then proximity chat. Every single time I am in a somewhat full platoon there is a great sense of teamwork, usually 2-3 people calling out objectives and the rest of the people follow, I've had a few good times on some galaxies which are huge air ships mainly used for transport. A good squad can take a few bases in 20 minutes by using these air ships effectively.

I also enjoy how sometimes defending a point is really hard, for instance there is a base in the middle of the map called "The Crown". I'm not sure of its strategic importance really, but its in the middle of all 3 factions and typically has major action. Whoever holds it can be attacked from either faction quite easily typically. Last night I think we defended it from a constant onslaught for about 2 hours. This requires constant repairs of the numerous turrents, repairing max (kinda like mech suits) suits with anti air going and having lots of medics holding on the bases.

I am hopefully going to upload videos to youtube periodically starting next week once my second video card gets back from RMA. I think my preferred faction is the NC right now but may try Vanu with the incoming character wipe.

Yea VOIP in PS2 is so freaking tits. Like 6 different channels that all work pretty much flawlessly. I was disappointed in VOIP (or the lack of it) in bf3 before but now it seriously just pisses me off knowing that a f2p game is blowing it out of the water.

Battlefield 3 still looks damn gorgeous (although ps2 def doesn't look bad) and don't get me wrong, I still love the game. All in all though, I think PS2 has really just raised the bar so high in so many different aspects that I really don't want to dedicate any more serious time into bf3.

Also in relation to your fps drops you were talking about in the top of page 2. Have you tried disabling HT on your cpu? That really helped out my 3930k in this game. Fps is higher and the game overall is just more fluid.
