Yes... it is that. But have no fear because outfits and squads make the game.
Unless you like just treating it as a shooter, as I do, and it is perfectly fun to play.

When you get into outfits you start playing with the Meta side of the game. Here there is tactics, organization, dedicated objectives to move the battlefield.

Otherwise, yes, just follow the blob to take the current objective. Sometimes you will find yourself with a lot of players not actually advancing, just fighting to fight, which is fun for a little while. Just find another group to fight with and you can totally change your mission for the day.

It is really what this game offers is the ability to move or do something else if your current situation gets boring.

just afraid this game is just a huge zerg-fest or vehicle vs vehicle though. I remember videos at launch just looking like random zerg-waves of players with no real focus
there is a zerg-fest in spots, but there are also many spots away from the zerg that are tactical battles. vehicles are much less prominent in battles than they used to be, they have over-nerfed air and armor to where a lot of the people have switched to infantry (or quit playing). they can still be found on the battlefields, but there are so many viable counters that they can be either killed or forced back to a less ideal position in maybe a minute.

I used to play the game mostly solo and found that getting caught up in the Zerg Blob movements resulted in me being forced into meat grinders. It was fun when I was doing the grinding but respawning and dying seconds later tends to get old fast. If you are playing this game only to shoot stuff and get kills, no need to bother with squads or outfits like Aparition said.

But seriously, give an outfit or small squad a try. Definitely a well organized one if you can (one with rules and leadership). It is a very different feel and can be quite enjoyable. I find that it is definitely much much slower to organize 12 or 48 people in vehicles, move to specific points, and get a good squad composition going. But when the team can roll off a larger force or successfully flank the opposing force, you feel good about yourself. Give it a try, it is what keeps me interested lately.

so you make it sound like teamwork is better integrated/natural in this game? rather than something that actually needs to be contrived

to put it in perspective, I enjoy playing BF3 by going with friends (or solo if they're not online) and taking obscure flanks/angles and making a difference that way. it SEEMS like Planetside's open nature could lend to this, unless the general population IQ is too low and they just bash heads in a killzone for hours

Exyia I am speaking from personal experience. The outfit I am in is pretty well organized and takes the time to come up with a plan of attack rather than following around the numbers blob. I would say that on average, most solo players and less organized groups tend to follow the swarm. Planetside 2 in most cases, is a game of numbers. Most of the time the side with the biggest swarm can overtake the other team. If you are a member of the swarm, you might as well go straight in and just overwhelm the other side.

That doesn't mean that you have to jump head first into fights. Individually or in groups you can choose to attack from new directions. One player can't do that much damage. I would say that at the very least, 6 well organized players can help. A full squad can be a nice blocker, and around 24+ can cause a problem for the other side.

Depending on the server and faction, there tends to be at least 2 or 3 organized groups that play in a similar fashion. You tend to get to know them quickly, because you find yourselves facing off each other pretty often. Those fights are absolutely fantastic because from the squad level up everybody is trying to match up fighting for key points, defensible positions, and objectives. Lots of good attacking, counter-attacking, and flanking occurs in those bouts.

Basically, if you like a little more tactics and organization look around and try a good outfit.

hmmm, so are outfits very public? or are they sort of a guild? or are they more of an auto or randomly assigned group like Battlefield

My early assumption was that they were like public squads in BF3 - as in they hardly pay attention if your name is green over blue; and that getting into a good outfit was merely a count of how many friends you have with you

but you make it sound similar to public guilds that openly invite from WoW (only analogy I can think of)

maybe it's not as bad as I thought. though weapon customization is a huge thing for me and from the video's, they all look cookie cutter and similar
post #2827 of 3016
There are squads, some public, some private which you can actively on a whim join, then there are outfits which are made up of squads which require invitation and usually have organization outside of the game.

A Clan so to speak,

The weapons are not designed as upgrades but flavors. Some offer basic stuff, some offer more attachments, some offer less attachments with better power, some are faster, some are slower.

You can be effective with any weapon, but the one that suits you more you will be more effective with.

You shouldn't expect to want to get every weapon and attachment in the game. Try them out with the 30min trial period or in the Virtual Room and see which suits you more, then work towards that weapon.

How do I teleport from one place to another?

DO I have to walk all the way to where the action is?

you can teleport on the green icons, either warpgate, spawn beacon, or sunderer.
you can always join up on a random squad and teleport to them, or use the instant action button as well.

Just adding to what LuminatX said, you can always spawn a Flash and drive to where you want to go. Or, if you are feeling lucky, hop a lift with a pubby Gal.

Sometimes I like to drive - you get to see the sights and get use to the terrain and roads, not to mention practicing your driving skills.

Teleporting is just one way to get there smile.gif
