I was about to ask that, could they even use a real address without getting in trouble with the owner of said place?

How is that fair? They created a fake test to make Google Maps look better than Apple Maps. It's not as if the latter doesn't have other problems they could use -- why not make a point of an airport being out of place, or it not finding a hotel or shopping centre, it doesn't have to be someone's house.

Ironically Apple Maps actually found the correct location. If they couldn't make a good enough ad which was legitimate than they shouldn't have run any.

Apple Maps does have problems, but as usual because it has to do with Apple, they're so incredibly exaggerated.

If were in charge of the add i'd put public transportation as the example.

That's the make or break for me as i'm new to Calgary and need to search commmutes based on the train/busses. Gmaps even gives you the schedules for alternative times incase you're not going right away.

If apple updates its maps to include that, i'd have no problem with the odd hiccup.

Its a new service and Apple knew it would be an uphill battle at first, but 6 months frrom now i'm sure this will be a non-issue. Apple obviously weighed this risk and came to the conclusion that most of their projected install base wouldn't be turned away in the transition period.

But for anyone looking to get a new phone and needs maps, i'd look elsewhere until its all ironed out.

The most common reason stupid/ironic things like this happen because the marketing department is the marketing department and the R&D department is the R&D department. People working in the marketing department aren't necessarily very tech savvy. They are simply informed to market feature X in maner Y. They don't a have the necessary know how to provoke the desired error for a commercial so the fake it.

Would it be better if all commercials where 100%? Yes but lets not live in a dream world.

So somehow this is supposed to show that Apple's Tom Tom powered maps app isn't bad? It should haven given the closest existing address in Manhattan, not some random address in Brooklyn.

New addresses can be created before GPS companies have a chance to update their map info. They will try and take a guess based on e street, odd/even address, and extrapolation between existing addresses, to give you where they think it might be, rather than lead you to some other address entirely.

Well in that case it did an extremely poor job of that too.

No one's living in a dream world, but what they've done is deceptive and they could have easily found numerous other issues to use as in their ad. It doesn't take know-how to do that, all you need is to search -- there's plenty of stuff out there.

No? It's supposed to show that Motorola faked the ad. Why would Apple Maps list an address that doesn't exist? It actually found you the right place.

Also Apple sources their maps from many different places, not just Tom Tom.

Agreed, Apple has some work to do on their map app.
