Ideas on a desk build

I have a vague idea for a desk. I will most likely use oak and stain it so I would like it to look professional. I have two computers so I have two of everything: two mice, keyboards and nostromos. I have a big razer mouse pad for the two mice. I would like a slide out drawer for my keyboard and mice and hopefully enough room to fit one or both nostromos on it as well (maybe tucked in behind the keyboard for easy access if needed). I have three 23.6" LCDs.

My main issue is space and design. 58" x 60" is the biggest I can go (unless I rearrange my room then I could go to about 80" x 60"). I would prefer to face the 58" side and it does not need to be 60" long the other way since I would probably use it to put a computer on and probably under, along with needing the monitor space.

Should I make two separate desks and latch them together on the bottom? Should I make a deeper desk with an oval cut out in the center? Should it be boxed in or should I use fancy table legs (can make a separate cabinet for drawers and such if needed)? How should the monitors be placed? On the desk or mounted with articulating arms to the desk? Any ideas on buying or making an articulating keyboard holder for my second pc?

My current setup.. Sorry for the bad lighting.

Would also like a good way to use one or two of my laptops as well.. weather they lay on the desk or in a mount. I have plans for a third desktop at some point as well.. So expand-ability is the key.

You seem to know what you're talking about, but if you want to see something similar (but very amateur) take a look at my worklog (see sig).

I went for a corner desk design... I don't know the arrangement of your room but if you wanted to make use of both walls maybe it will work for you.

Also, I find slide-out trays to be annoying. I built the main worktop out of 2"x4" timbers butter-fly jointed together and it is SO sturdy. I love it, and its a perfect surface for a keyboard + mouse. If desk-space for other things is your concern, maybe consider a flexible VESA mount for your monitors to raise them off the desk (you could fix them to the wall or clamp them to the back of the desk) - that would give you more space.

As for the 2nd computer... I would be tempted to use a KVM (keyboard, video & mouse) switch or something so that you can just switch PCs and use the same keyboard and mouse. But if you don't like that idea, maybe put its peripherals in a slide-out tray? If you go with a straight desk rather than a corner desk maybe you could built a slide out tray that rotates out... so that it comes to your side rather than in front of you?

I'm rambling now...but maybe your interpretations of my terribly unclear post will give you some ideas rolleyes.gif

Your desk looks really sturdy! Do you have any pictures of the setup in your room?

I have thought about a kvm switch but I am not sure if I would like it or not. Maybe I will try one out before I make any decisions. Any that you would recommend? Just needs to be a switch for my usb keyboard. If I could get used to the switch, it could solve those issues. Thanks for the idea (I have thought about getting a kvm switch in the past for other reasons but could not find one that suited my needs at the time).

My current room arrangement leaves me the space between my Tv armoire and the corner which measures about 58" my chair would need to face this wall. I also have the room between the corner and my window which measures about 60". I would prefer an L desk but would be open to a straight desk if it could suite my needs. I am leaning more towards having real table legs, for dis-assembly, instead of having it boxed in like yours because I am concerned about moving it into and out of my room.

I was thinking about using these for my monitors.

I would love to do some sketches on CAD, but unsure of how to do so. I had a machine shop class in school that entailed cnc machining, but the programming was different than your standard CAD programs.

I've moved room since then, and I'm abroad at the moment but I can take a few pictures when i get back in a week or so.

I've not used a KVM switch myself, it was just an idea ^^

Mine actually dissembles but its a little messy. The top lifts off and the cupboard section goes flat-pack too. If you were going with an L-desk I would recommend this. You can make a straight cupboard section with shelves or whatever and have a the L-section to be your main desk, it can rest on the cupboards at one end and legs at the other.

Those monitor stands look good, you can also get some designed for multiple displays which are kinda cool. I'm planning to get one of those when my Korean 27" monitor arrives smile.gif

In terms of CAD, I would download Sketchup and start playing around with it. Its really good for quick 3D modelling.

My vote is for making a huge corner desk with the main seating area facing diagonally into the corner. Build a shelf into the corner for holding speakers behind the monitors. And why not extend the desk beyond the window too, even if its not full width it gives you some extra desk space.

If your leg room was in the corner, you could have two storage areas either side of the seating area... for computers, drawers, mini-fridge... you get the idea!

Yeah, I like big things redface.gif

haha.. Sorry I didn't notice you previous post until now... I don't like the idea of my seat facing the corner tongue.gif As far as shelving and drawers go, I really don't need them. Until I move somewhere else, I won't be using speakers for audio, only headphones. If I do incorporate storage space, I would like it to face the window possibly. If I extended it past the window, it would not leave me with room between my bed and wall. I might be able to fit my dresser between my bed and closet, then move my TV armoire to where the dresser is leaving me room to expand my desk towards the door. I am also trying to decide on how I should arrange my towers... On the desk to my right? If I did that, I would not have room to put my laptops there. I could suspend them from the desk in the corner and along the side closer to the window. Or I could build shelving by the window, but might possibly run into cable length problems. Could also build wooden stands for them under the desk but not attached to the desk. If I moved my tv around I would actually be able to see it by just turning towards it.

The things I could do with an entire spare room. Bedrooms suck for office/man-cave space... Projector onto a whole blank wall... complete 2 walled desk... Huge bean bag chair... Futon... A man can dream right? I would totally have that if I had a spare room! Also a fridge is nice and all... but then you would never have to leave the room... The walk to the kitchen is not so bad fundamentally.
