Got my replacement today.

Seems it's a new card.

Going to be testing it hard all this week.

Just going to throw my two cents into this thread.

I have a 6770 that had almost all of these same issues, and I fixed them by disabling power play in the vga bios.

Using RBE I set ALL PROFILES clocks and voltages to the same values I had set for the full power 3D profile. Never had another problem with clocks changing in game, crashing, or visual artifacts.

Im not sure if the cause is the same on the 7xxx series cards, but it likely is.

I personally think that the profiles are changing too fast and the voltages are not able to come up to the needed level before the clock change kicks in. Do we know if this issue is limited to non-reference designs, or all designs? My 6770 was a MSI branded card with a reduced cost PCB layout and probably inferior voltage regulation circuitry.

Sapphire has acknowledged in their forums that there is a hardware issue with an earlier batch of the 78xx series cards. smile.gif

It doesn't seem to effect just one range of cards; it's been scattered around the vendors, but it seems to be the most concentrated around Sapphire (maybe their cards were produced first?).

I'm am using a PowerColor 7870 PCS+ Vortex II edition card now. But my bios is .018 not .017 like what you guys have..

But I think I still have a problem though, Whenever I overclock it past for its default clocks (1150 / 1250) say, like + 50 on core and mem, It can pass Heaven 3.0 and 3dMark11 benchmarks but will ALWAYS FAIL in playing a game like Far Cry 3 or BF3. It will crash/freeze either saying driver stopped working and had recovered or no signal then pc will restart. I can game without any issue on defaults clocks though, but even a single +10 core overclock, it won't handle Far Cry 3. And this is a second card already, (just had my first vortex II card replaced outright for the very same issue). But that old card can't even do 3DMARK 11 with even a single low overclock.

Any Ideas guys? Just don't overclock it or it's because I'm using Windows 8 and this OS doesn't do good in overclocking gpus?

Farcry 3 is generally quite hard on overclocks. most people are having to run their GTX 680/GTX 670 or HD 7970/ HD 7950 at lower overclocks than previously. its a recent game. patches are still being released. AMD 12.11 beta 11 drivers are new. so its a combination of multiple reasons. But BF3 should work with a slight overclock. since its not maybe increasing voltage could provide you the stability to run at 1200 Mhz .

I see.. Imma try BF3 now.. thanks! But nonetheless, this 7870 PCS+ Vortex II card is super awesome in performance specially in looks! monster card.

I tested BF3 in an OC of 1200 / 1300 and it crashed after 10 mins playing. I think Windows 8 is the main problem here.

could be. why do you run Windows 8. Windows 7 is still the best option.

I just got my Powercolor 7870 Vortex II card, same 0.18 bios as the above Vortex II user. Looks like I got a faulty card, I'm not able to run Skyrim, it starts artifacting after a few seconds and Skyrim crashes. I get no reboots or anything, the game is the only thing that crashes. I'm going to test it out more later on but I'm really disappointed as of now. Hopefully a voltage bump or downclock can fix it.

Edit: Alright, updated to 12.11. Kombustor freezes right after I launch it, the screen goes black for a couple of seconds and then returns, and I get a message saying that the AMD drivers crashed and recovered. Also noticing some random artifacting while not running any 3d applications, not often, every now and again I'll see this white tear appear and disappear very quickly.

Edit 2 : Just experienced the black screen crash after ~5 minutes of Skyrim, was also accompanied by a looping noise. Tried Heaven and it behaves exactly like Kombustor. I just tried boosting the voltage and power limit, and it didn't help at all. Is there anything else I should try before starting an RMA? I'm not sure if I should try for a replacement or just ask for a refund... really don't want to receive another defective card and have shipping charges add up. :S

I don't know what is up with these Vortex II cards but it seems almost everyone that owns one has received a defective a card. The only place I can find where people are writing their first card actually worked is on Newegg reviews, where there is also another person with the black screen issue. A bunch of people on NCIX forums also received bad cards, there was another thread about it too iirc. Curiously, NCIX discontinued this video card as soon as they sold out during Black Friday. And there's an OCN user who had this issue, plus the guy above me who mentions he's already RMA'd once.

I found out about this problem after my payment had processed, but not shipped, and I took a chance on this video card because I didn't want to go through canceling my order and having to wait for the money to show back up in my prepaid, last time it took a little over 2 weeks. Since NCIX was out of stock and hadn't shipped I figured mine would be coming from a different batch and it'd be okay, wish I had just canceled my order lol. I feel like this card is the new Sapphire that drew all the attention for this black screen issue, just less popular. rolleyes.gif

Unrelated, but has anyone received a blank rectangle where the coupon code should be for the Never Settle bundle? I got my code from NCIX and typed it in at the AMD site, received the email from AMD with the 20% off MOH: WF, and for Far Cry 3, except there's no code for Far Cry 3, it's just a blank spot in the grey rectangle. I've tried it in Chrome, IE, and Firefox. This purchase is turning out to be nothing but trouble. mad.gif
