I'm going to test it out more later on but I'm really disappointed as of now. Hopefully a voltage bump or downclock can fix it.
Edit: Alright, updated to 12.11. Kombustor freezes right after I launch it, the screen goes black for a couple of seconds and then returns, and I get a message saying that the AMD drivers crashed and recovered. Also noticing some random artifacting while not running any 3d applications, not often, every now and again I'll see this white tear appear and disappear very quickly.
Edit 2 : Just experienced the black screen crash after ~5 minutes of Skyrim, was also accompanied by a looping noise. Tried Heaven and it behaves exactly like Kombustor. I just tried boosting the voltage and power limit, and it didn't help at all. Is there anything else I should try before starting an RMA? I'm not sure if I should try for a replacement or just ask for a refund... really don't want to receive another defective card and have shipping charges add up. :S
I don't know what is up with these Vortex II cards but it seems almost everyone that owns one has received a defective a card. The only place I can find where people are writing their first card actually worked is on Newegg reviews, where there is also another person with the black screen issue. A bunch of people on NCIX forums also received bad cards, there was another thread about it too iirc. Curiously, NCIX discontinued this video card as soon as they sold out during Black Friday. And there's an OCN user who had this issue, plus the guy above me who mentions he's already RMA'd once.
I found out about this problem after my payment had processed, but not shipped, and I took a chance on this video card because I didn't want to go through canceling my order and having to wait for the money to show back up in my prepaid, last time it took a little over 2 weeks. Since NCIX was out of stock and hadn't shipped I figured mine would be coming from a different batch and it'd be okay, wish I had just canceled my order lol. I feel like this card is the new Sapphire that drew all the attention for this black screen issue, just less popular. rolleyes.gif

Unrelated, but has anyone received a blank rectangle where the coupon code should be for the Never Settle bundle? I got my code from NCIX and typed it in at the AMD site, received the email from AMD with the 20% off MOH: WF, and for Far Cry 3, except there's no code for Far Cry 3, it's just a blank spot in the grey rectangle. I've tried it in Chrome, IE, and Firefox. This purchase is turning out to be nothing but trouble. mad.gif

Well, I think that's indeed a faulty card. If I were you, imma have it replaced right away or refund if you can and buy a regular 7870 (look for cheap ones) and oc it. or go to green team if you want to.
Mine behave perfectly fine right now. I think I found the problem in mine, my PSU. I am using a 700w Cougar CM Power (purchased 2009) and I think this can't cope up with heavy overclock for both my CPU and GPU. I think the amps in its 12v is not good enough. Might get a corsair ones soon. But remember, I only get these driver crashing or reboots whenever I TOUCH / OVERCLOCK the already-overclocked-clocks. AND also when my CPU (Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33 GHz) is OVERCLOCKED to 3.1 Ghz. (440 MHz bump in fsb of my old asus pq5 se mobo with ddr2 rams 4g). Tested whit CPU OC and GPU OC to 1200 / 1300 in furmark AND Prime95 AT THE SAME TIME- and my PC always crashes. BSOD, Reboot, black screen, you name it. But whenever I leave the clocks on my Vortex II to it's default - 1150/1250 and overclock my CPU up to 2.8 GHz ONLY, It never crash. I can play Battlefield 3, Diablo 3, and Far Cry 3 for hours (are they all part 3?? ^_^ ) without any hiccups or crash at all. I think this cards require a very good psu to be stable as the clocks is really high and all. When I underclock this Vortex 2 to 750 / 950 clocks, my 400w Enermax Liberty PSU can even handle it without any trouble at all. But never on stock clock.

Now I'm using this new Vortex II 7870 without any trouble at all. Really itchy in overclocking it again but I think my psu is that bad ( read that also in my psu reviews online-its bad) so I left it under its already overclocked stock and enjoying BF3 50 - 60 fps stable @ ultra settings 1080p =)

And Also, I just noticed, you're still using the Catalyst 12.10. That version is really buggy specially to our 7870 so make sure to update to the 12.11 Beta11 Driver which addresses A LOT of issues specially these crashing and black screens in 7870. I am a bit technical and I really believe that THESE issues ARE NOT a hardware problem but a DRIVER problem. If it's a hardware problem, the card itself isn't going to work at soon as you boot up your pc, or under windows basic drivers.

Black screen is hardware problem, and if you are experiencing it, you should RMA.

I don't believe that's always the case. Once I used atiman to clean up all the left over drivers I haven't had a single problem. 12.11/11 beta drivers, cap2,1200/1400, 1.237v core, 2040 X 1152 resolution and 2–3 hours of FC3 a night.

I dont know, me and service center were able to replicate black screen problem on my Sapphire HD 7870 after 6 days of testing, about 4-5 hours of gaming everyday.

Guyz,

All of you who are facing Black screen issue, the problem is hunted down to a particular SKU (Sapphire)

11199-03-XX and Prior SKU

IF you have the above SKU card/or older you have a lemon.

BTW, all users here who's card working perfectly fine OR having black scrren issue - Plz post your SKU # and share information

The Vortex II was the cheapest I've seen a 7870, it was part of the reason I didn't cancel my order lol. 199.99 at NCIX during Black Friday. Glad you have yours working fine now.

I wrote in my first edit that I updated to 12.11, also installed cap 2. The reason these cards with the black screen problem work for anything but 3d applications is, iirc, the capacitors are bad. So, they are fine until the load increases, at which point they stumble and you get a crash.

Got my RMA number from NCIX today, hope I can get them to pay shipping lol. It's a pain because I have to ship across all of Canada, which means more time and money.

I doubt it bro. Coz when I use furmark - which is MUCH more stressful than a regular game, I can run it for hours without any crash at all on 1200/1300 clocks. But When playing FarCry 3 or BF3, It will sometimes crash/reboot/driver error. I never had a black screen as far as I can remember (but maybe because my 32 ledtv shows blue when no display?).

But nonetheless, My Vortex II rocks right now and so far so good. Enjoying playing FC3, BF3, ME3, D3, (what else you have a part three there? ^_^ ) but seriously all these games are super awesome and these are the games that I pay everyday. So far so good. Never had a crash anymore since I lowered my CPU oc a bit. (not my GPU).
