how do u disable powerplay? i don't see the option in MSI Afterburner or in Catalyst control panel

update: I resulted to using the tool that came with my HIS 7870. iTurbo
it has the option to Disable 2D clocks which prevent random downclocking during 3D workloads and helps overvolt

This is how i fixed downclocking.

But even with 12.6 I'm still having performance issues in games. In benchmarks using 12.6 my 7870 is a good deal better than my old 6870, but in games it's either the same, or worse.
This is especially the case in Bad Company 2 multi-player where I get stuttering and jerky game play at 1680x1050 and only 2x aa and 4x af.
It's driving me bonkers, is the card broken somehow? Is it my cpu? or psu? I'm really hoping it's just a driver issue.

There is an easier way, use 12.8 whql, and oc just a bit (i did 2 mhz) and it fixed the downclocking. This trick no longer works in 12.9.

That works too, but it makes your card run 3D clocks non-stop. The easiest way is to use 12.8 and oc just a bit (i did 2 mhz)(or you can oc as much as you want) and it fixes the downclocking. This trick does not work in 12.9.

I personally dont have downclocking problem with 12.8, but i have other problems, and 12.9 beta is faster, so its worth to fight for it imho.

There you will find how to disable powerplay and also have low 2d clocks in idle.

The 12.9 drivers are not much faster than 12.8, unlike 12.9/8/7 vs 12.6 (thats why i wont go back to 12.6) so it's not worth the hassle (disable ulps, disable poweplay, enable unofficial oc, use custom profiles) just to fix a small thing that can be fixed immediately with 12.8 and any standard oc. That said, if AMD do not wake up and fix this problem by 12.10, than there will be no other choice but to jump through hoops to get our cards to behave, which is shameful given that i keep defending AMD drivers in front of nvidia users.

BTW, do any of these fixes actually do something for the weird gpu usage? or are they just for the downclocking problem.

12.8 WHQL is giving me BSOD in metro 2033, and i am playing it these daya again, so its not option.

As it stand now, no fix is available for wrong GPU usage report, luckily its just wrong reading, performances are not affected.

ULPS should only be disabled for CFX users.
