New Build...GOOD & BAD...

Thread Starter
Just a little back-story. Joined the USAF. Love it!. But before I did, I worked at a computer repair shop and knew a little how to fix/build machines. Didn't have the money to go out and buy the top of the line AMD (1100T at the time...not that it isn't today). So I'm sure you may have done it before in the past where you slowly piece together an awesome beast over time. Finally finshed it. Then came the Air Force so I sold off the machine and got a nice higher-end laptop. Mistake. So I sold it and decided "in time" I'll get another machine. Well I work computers still now and everyone started to pressure me into building another for gaming and such. SO I started doing what I did before by buying deal components offline one by one, returning a few. The end result is as follows:

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz ---$89
MSI 990FXA-GD80V2 ---$149
MSI R7870 HAWK Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 ---$239
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) ---$119
Kingston HyperX 3K 120GB 2.5" SATA III Solid State Drive (SSD) ---$65
Seagate 2TB Internal Hard Drive ---$19
COOLER MASTER Elite 430 ---$25
COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus ---$19
Rocketfish RF-500WPS2 PSU (600watt peak) ---$25
LITE-ON DVD Burner ---$14
2 x APEVIA CF12S-BK 120mm Case Fan ---$9
XIGMATEK 3.5" Internal 75 in 1 Card Reader ---$7
Rosewill RNX-N250PCe Wireless Adapter ---$19

=$798 (after I get my rebates back:mad:)

I'll post pics today don't worry! thumb.gif I know how pics are everything! (can't stand people posting crap on Craigslist with no pics).

Tell me what yall think?

OP you really need to get a better power supply, I'd be surprised if that thing could even power your pc at full load.

Help me understand the difference between just running the machine and running it under full load. What kind of power requirement/consumption difference is there?

There are two different "stages" (couldn't think of a better word) of power for you computer idle and under load. Idle is when your computer is on, but the computer is not doing anything but the normal processes (running the OS). Under load is when the computer is doing something other than staying on. For example if you are playing a game your computer is under load (usally referred to as Full Load). When you look at Facebook or an internet site your computer is technically under load, but that load is much lower than say when you are gaming.

People are recommending a better brand of power supply because the current one you have selected is an unknown brand and that can lead to a computer with fired components. The power supply is one thing you should never be cheap on because it is how your computer gets its power and if something happens to it (power surge) it could cause a snowballing effect which kills more of your components. Here is a list of recommended Power Supplies.

Here is a pretty good read for more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_supply_unit_(computer)

Thanks so much for clarifying! I have been warned of this power supply for the same reasons that they are unknown. I only chose this psu because I've used it in the past to power a closely similar build with an HD6950 to play games such as SC2, BFBC2, Crysis, and BF3 on max. Currently doing the same with my current rig so I guess that may constitute as being under full load. In the old rig, it was used for over a year with no problems.

BUT...

I'm not going to say its the "one and only". How can I "stress" test the psu or come up with some for data on it? Only info I know about it is its manufactured by Huntkey...and its 80+ certified...sadsmiley.gif

Pics are up! And its funny because now that I look at everyone elses rig, mine looks like a rats nest of wires inside mad.gif

I suggest you should change to a another (much better) PSU such as Corsair,Seasonic or Kingwin.550W of them are far-far-far beyond Rocketfish's 600watt thumb.gif
Oh..and could you tidy up that cable a little bit? biggrin.gif

Hey There Mate,

I am in the same boat as you, first build ever, had computers but never learnt what to put in them.

The info I have received from the guys on here on how I can make the PC better is worthwhile. I went the opposite to you I bought a known PSU but too much power (Will not use it all).

Like the pics and the cable management is not that hard it just takes time. I am doing it little bit by little bit (In between work).

Have fun
