cooler block skim?

Thread Starter
im currently using a H60 and im thinking about some modifications.

namely a much much larger rad (8x bigger). which is pretty obviously gonna help it a great deal

however i have another idea for improvement. skimming (professionally) the cooler block contact surface, so in essence the coolant channels and the coolant is much closer to the chip itself.

has this been done before? if so how much would be a safe amount to skim off? or would i need to buy another H60 for sacrificial investigation to figure out how much i can safely skim off the block?

any help would be appreciated

Well you could lap it to increase the surface area, but I'm not sure about skimming some off. I imagine the produce it the way they do for a reason tongue.gif What CPU are you running and what are your temps? Maybe time for a H100 or a custom loop?

Here is a Lapped H60. I would suggest this if your wanting the block performance to increase.

many have used the H50/60/70/80/100 MOD to use larger radiators and most worked
for a bit and then failed. usually the pump dies. and prolly from lack of return pressure
to the pump. these pumps are not that strong to carry 2-3x more fluid and more
restriction.

lapping the block and CPU (if done correctly) might yield 2°-3° (no guarentee). actually
more to mess up if not lapped parallel to each other and you've removed heatsink
material to much and ....

id just buy it and install it, before vesting a lot of $$.. it might not perform to your needs
in stock trim.. investing $100 in lapping and larger rads makes for a custom loop faster.

so im best of investing a real water cooling kit.

in heinsight i realise skimming wont do much. ive seen a few threads where theyve taken these apart now. and likewise with other cooler blocks.

i could see potential in drilling/scratching the rear side on the non-gasket areas to increase the contact surface with the coolant.

i am an aircon and fridge engineer. i have access to many aircon tools and parts at a minimal cost. as i understand its very similar to phase cooling?

has anyone made an aircon unit into a phase cooling unit? installation and gassing would be simple. its just control method from the cpu fan header to the cooling unit itself id need some help on. and a cpu block with copper channels that i could braise to.
