Moving to 120hz, and 2ms- ASUS VG278HE?

Thread Starter
So a couple months ago I upgraded from a 20" LCD HP 2009m (1600x900) to a 27" LED HP 2711x (1920x1080). The 2711x has a 5ms delay and I think that's what's holding it back in terms of gaming. I love the display but I just ordered my roommate's ASUS VS248H-P and set it up for him and- WOW. Is it the 2ms delay that makes it look that much better? I mean the color contrast is great but the fluidity is night and day between my 2711x and his VS248H-P, and thats not even 120hz! So I'm looking at selling my 2009m (for whatever I can get for it tongue.gif ) and using that towards the ASUS VG278HE. So how does the VG278HE fair? What about 3D- is it worth getting the glasses for? I don't care for 3D movies in theaters but I haven't tried 3D gaming yet. I'm excited for the 144hz though. Also, will my GTX670 DCU2-TOP handle the 3D if I chose that route? $500 is a bit much but it is a sweet display. rolleyes.gif

What's the chances it will go on sale during the November madness?

If you liked the fluid display on a 60hz screen then the 144hz will blow it out of the water.

If your into the 3D your 670 will hold you up fine but its the smooth 2D images that make spending money on a 120hz+ monitor worth the hassle.

I game with a GTX 580 on 120hz and its terrific for that.

Im really pleased with mine so far. The VG278H is the same panel but include 3D glasses and is "only" 120hz. If you think 3D is something you might want then the VG278H migth be a better option. The difference between 120hz and 144hz will be null.

I could give a crap about 3D though so I went with VG278HE. Havent looked back since. Its no IPS panel but the colors are decent and since your not used to 1440p, 1080p res should be just fine. What it lack in color and clarity it makes up for in pure speed.

What about movies? When playing movies on, say, the PS3, it upscales the image and displays it at 120hz if your TV is compatible (I believe). Will movies take advantage of the 144hz as well?

Not really, movies wont see a significant gain.

TV's pull of some trickery that make the image seem more fluid, its quite interesting to watch but your not seeing true 120hz (I am sure someone more cleverer than I can give you a better breakdown on the way TV's handle their 120hz moniker).

You wont get that effect by watching movies on a 120hz monitor.

120hz monitors are dependent on your machine rendering as close to 120FPS as possible. If its chugging along at 50FPS your not going to see much difference from a standard 60hz panel. But with that GTX 670 your gonna be rocking it good so don't worry about it.

Yeah but in no games that are modern you can push 144fps.

I am not understanding what you are trying to say? People get these framerates all the time. I have seen some games go over 200fps
