Mine cost me roughly $300 for parts ( aside from case, hdd's )

Intel i3-2120
ASRock Z77 Extreme4-M
Corsair CX430
Samsung low profile ran 4x2GB

I wanted a big case so bought the Silverstone GD08

And I had a few 1TB drives laying around from my file server.

And didn't bother with a video card, the i3 does pretty good on it's own onboard.

Ok I did some playing around with the same $650 you used and this is what I came up with.

First of there is the BitFenix Prodigy case (also comes in black) that I strongly recommend you get as its one of the IMO best Mini-ITX cases around and it can actually fit a proper CPU cooler. As you will be using a SSD as a boot drive you don't need a very fast HDD so the cheaper 1.5TB Barracuda Green should fit your need just fine. The there is the 7770 GHz edition that is much faster then the HD 6670 but only $30 more. As you are now using a discrete graphics card you no longer need an APU so I swapped out the A8 for a athlon II x4. And like I mentioned earlier you really do want a silent cooler for a HTPC so the Hyper 212 should suite you well. And to finish it up a decent 8GB ram kit.

Now if you really don't intend to do much gaming on this build I would scrap the discrete graphics all together and only use the integrated graphics of the AMD A8-3870K. In this case it should be noted that good high speed ram is a must as this works as a frame buffer in APU's. My choice in this case the HyperX 8GB that is rated up to 1866MHz. A APU only build is also somewhat cheaper naturally.

Trinity CPUs are out now, so you should look into that.
