[Massively] Fanbase negativity responsible for Bioware founder exit?

Former BioWare dev Trent Oster thinks that fan negativity probably contributed to the recent exit strategy for BioWare founders Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka.

"The last time I met up with [Greg], I felt his exhaustion," Oster told Now Gamer. 'Punch out, eject, get the hell out,' was my suggestion to him and it hit closer to the mark than I had realized. I also think the Mass Effect 3 fan reaction and the Old Republic fans' negativity was just too much."

Oster goes on to express surprise at Muzyka's departure, saying that he had him "pegged as an EA lifer."

"I'm sure the internal culture at EA had pinned the Old Republic conversion to free-to-play as a failure and hung that completely on Ray, so that would have hurt his upward climb. But, I figured he would fight harder. EA upper management must have been even worse than I thought," Oster explained.

SOURCE

why do Bioware employees find it so easy to blame everything on their fans? will they be killed if they actually stand up and point the finger where it belongs(EA)? at least some blame for his exit is put on upper management(should be 100% of the blame for everything that has transpired after DAO and ME1).

EDIT:

“You have to love games and you put your heart into them to create them. To have the fans creating petitions against the work is pretty hard to take, especially when you've spent the last few years crunching overtime to try and ship a game. It can be hard to shut off the overwhelming negativity the internet spews forth, especially when it has your name or the name of your company in it.”

yea, they pulled a George Lucas.

Yeah I doubt it, regarding Muzyka in particular. Dude is a legend. I find it very hard to believe that backlash from one game laid him low.

All of these companies and many others need to understand that their fanbase made them and they can break them, the sooner this is relized the sooner we can start getting things we pay for how we expect them to be for the money we are paying.

Eh whatever. Bioware sold out. I don't care that they sold out to EA in a financial sense, but artistically and quality wise I was pissed. DA2 sucked. Me3 had some nice improvements, but ultimately failed to live up to their promises. And SWToR? Hell I preordered the Collectors Edition, and haven't logged in in a year.

EA ruins most of what it touches. I won't buy another Bioware product.

So its fan base fault. Never their incompetence that ruined a game. I see. I use to respect Bioware for ME1-2 and Dragon age origins. Then this happened.

Who said he was blaming the fans? It said that he may have left because the games were not well received by the fans, i.e. He was a disappointment to his fans and that made him want to leave.

Personally I feel that EA ruins studios that it buys, and that ME3 and SWTOR may have been better off without EA, even though I'm not sure that BioWare would have had the budget to even make SWTOR without EA.

I blame EA for forcing bioware's development cycle which results in crappy half-finished games.

If Bioware did a kickstarter project like Obsidian, that took a project completely out of EA's hands I would gladly support them.

@ lordikon: the guys says he thinks the negativity from swtor and mass effect 3 fans contributed to the founders' decision. that is to say the fan reaction was responsible. no one at this company has ever taken responsibility for anything whatsoever, and time and time again offload any blame on to the fans(DA2, TOR, ME3). this is definitely not ray or greg blaming themselves.

I'm not disagreeing about what was said, I'm disagreeing with how everyone is interpreting it. He didn't say the fans were wrong, and that the games were great, he said that he thought that the founder may have quit due to those reactions, which could easily mean that he quit because he had disappointed his fanbase.
