Do you think i damaged my EVGA GTX 580?

Thread Starter
Since this is OCN, hope you guys understand the Need For Speed here...

I had my GTX 580 at 975/1950/2100 @ 1.212V, it passed Heaven at 86C Max. then about 3-5 mins later the screen went flicker crazy, windows strarted to have a tail when i moved them around, their was Artifacts Everwhere and this was just on the Desktop. It only got worse when the Folding driver kicked in.

I hit RESET in Afterburner and Shut down the PC right away. Then when i resarted it, and tried to OC back to 950 @ 1.163V which had been stable through Crysis 2, GTA 4, Heaven and weeks of Folding, it crashed on Heaven....i tinkered with it and finally said screw it. I reinstalled my drivers, did some Registry Cleaning and Shut off my PC overnight, this Moring i started her up, hit the 950 @ 1.163V and she has Now passed Heaven twice and has folded 2 WU's. She is back to normal i guess you could say.

Is their any chance i should RMA while the RMAing is good and just stick with the MAX of 950 Core with the New one? OR Do you think it's okay for the long haul? (1-2 Years at 950 Core)

Thanks.

I really hope i didn't screw up my $450 Card frown.gif But i wanna know the truth thumb.gif

i wouldnt run it at 86C if i had a gun to my head. if you sent it in for RMA they just check it out and since it works fine at stock they will send it right back to you. I wouldnt let it go over 75C to expect 3+ years out of it. Buy more fans to keep it cooler at 950 core

You use an unlocked BIOS right? I guess the maximum allowed voltage in the original BIOS is 1.138mV.
1.163mV is very high for prolonged periods. you might degrade the card substantially if you keep it at that for 24/7.
Also a friendly advice, If you don't want to kill your card fast, don't run Furmark or OCCT with it again at that crazy voltage, you are lucky your card survived and 86 C at that voltage is pretty damn high.

Yeah, definitely watch the temps when your pushing higher voltages. If they dont detect anything wrong they will send it back from RMA.

So just ensure that you keep it at a relatively safe voltage with adequate cooling. It's a nice card so I wouldn't over do it if it's becoming unstable.

Yea its flashed bios. Actually reference 580's bios should limit you to 1.150v max. Unlocked bios will let you go to 1.212V which is his max.

I've got unlocked bios on my 580 and I haven't gone past 1.188v yet. I can only get 945Mhz stable at 1.175v. I've black screened once and that really makes me scared. I use heaven3.0 for stress testing and I'm rock solid at 935Mhz @ 1.163V and 945Mhz @ 1.175v. I believe 1.188V is stable at like 955Mhz. Crappy clocking chip but I'm still trying to figure out why it doesn't clock so well. I have a feeling its VRM but im not sure. I'm afraid to push it even more...

I've removed the heat spread on the 580 and run direct die Antec 620 cooling to it. Lastnight it got upto 55C which is the hottest its been since I removed the IHS. I typically fold at 44-48C. I can't imagine having it that hot either.

1.293v at 1038 stable heaven with 56c using The Mod. Perhaps you should look into it for those kind of runs

Yea but your running a non-reference Asus ROG 580...we're on reference boards and its really questionable how much current these stock VRM's can take... I think if I'm gonna push 1.2v I need new thermal pads for them.

Yes Modded BIOS for 1.212V

I assume the EVGA GTX 580 3072MB is a Stock VRM PCB? Dang lol

Well it needed 1.013V not 1.0V to run Stock (772) and it has always been a little shakey under Heaven 3.0, so i would hope they would send me Another card?

If you guys don't think my 1.212V run at 975/1950/2100 @86C damaged my chip and it will last another Year or so..i won't RMA. But if i have "crompised" my OC room now, i would like to RMA.

My current is 950/1900/2100 at 1.175V and it stays under 83C for Heaven 3.0 and Folding and thats with the FAN at 100% and 4 fans on it. If that will hurt it thanks to my stupid OV run earlier, then i might wanna RMA.

Thanks.

580 GTX normally are ok at 900/950mhz range, but 975 was overkill over that 950
