Hello,

I'm looking into virtualizing many of my independent servers into a single quad core computer short of my FP and DNS/AD server which will be there own server, the only thing im running into a wall with is im trying to figure out how to structure the network flow through my virtualized server. ie.

I'm just uncertain how to organize this structuring as i have done with independent boxes.

On the virtualization host, you will need at least 1 port dedicated for management, and 1 for the VM networking. The one for VM networking is vlan enabled (or can be depending on virtualization solution), so plug that direct into the pfsense, and then configure vlans for each type of system. You can P to V them through the management, then assign whatever vlan you want to each virtual system when done. Then have the pfsense sort out the traffic.

I'm not the best artist, but you get the point.

Note: on the picture I said vmware host, didn't realize you didn't specify a virtualization software yet....

in my title i stated vmware im familar with managing a vmware enviroment but ive never actually set one up.
I was hpoing to be able to intergrate the the untangel and pfsense box into the virt enviroment. just ot clarifuy im using certain eatures from untangle that i like but pfsense will be my router.

Another option would be to virtualise the whole thing.

Some advantages of this are you could run Untangle/pfSense vAppliances and manage the flow of traffic with VLANS all in the one box.

But it would still require multiple physical NIC's and possibly a vSwitch depending on how you choose to implement.
