[The Atlantic] In California, It's Now Illegal for Employers and Universities to Ask for Your... - Page 3

People are worried about being asked to give up their password but not the fact that their personal information is data mined and sold to the highest bidder? Right....

Certain story of a pregnant teen girl whose father found out she was expecting from ads targeting pregnancy comes to mind...

But by all means, don't allow your employer to know what you do on the weekend.

Join us, the social outcasts, and just say no to Facebook.

Even if I wouldnt be employed because of it, I wouldnt want to divulge that info willingly anyways.

well they could still refuse to employ you. your private life isnt that private when you are telling everyone everything on twitter and facebook.

simple solution is not use social media like the good ol days

Honestly my standard answer would be this

"You can gladly have my password as I have nothing to hide. However, this interview is over. Any company that would ask for my personal information doesn't have any sense of privacy for it's customers."

How can you trust any company that would even ask this. Computer programmers? lol, "can you put some tracking code into that program?"

I work in healthcare, I deal with personal and confidential information daily. It offends me that employers would even ask this. It's not like ppl are posting rapes, murders or robberies on FB.

Shocking that a law had to be passed for this.....Common sense anyone, half of social networking is through private messaging...PRIVATE, being the key word.

I don't think it should be illegal for an employer to request such things, or deny you a job if you refuse.

I do think that asking for such information is an absurd violation of privacy and think anyone who submits to such demands is a fool or a lunatic.

These views are not incompatible in the slightest. If you don't like an employer's terms, do not work for them.
