120Hz - what options do I have?

Thread Starter
I've been at it for a few hours now researching, and it looks like the only decent 120Hz monitors are the Samsung S23A700D or S23A750D or BenQ XL2420T. I'm partial to the Samsungs because I only hear good things about them except the gloss screen, which is well by me. The talk about BenQ's colors really put me off. Thing is, though, the Samsungs are discontinued and they aren't VESA mount compatible(any mods around that? Not a deal breaker, however). The Samsung S23A950D I've read have backlight problems because of the stupid stand design, and on top of that it is also stupid expensive for no good reason at all.

Should I just say screw it and go with the ASUS VG236H? But then I read about green tinting issues. frown.gif

Things you should know:
Don't care/won't use 3D,
Do not want any monitors larger than 24". Larger ones just don't work well for me when playing FPS video games.
$500 budget,
I have a NEC 20WMGX2 that works great for web browsing and such, but I would prefer to use a single, primary monitor instead of it.
I have a 40" TV. Works great for movies and stuff, but it's just so big that trying to read text and such on it after awhile just strains my eyes bad.

Please help decide me here! smile.gif Are there any good ones coming out soon? Purchasing absolutely now isn't necessary; I can wait.

Talking about native resolution? Of course. smile.gif Though, I am running at 1920 x1080 on my Catleap right now even though it is a little smudgier. smile.gif

Also a great monitor appears to be a Planar SA2311W, but I can't find it anywhere since it was also discontinued. Companies are dumb. frown.gif

The green tinting on the vg236he is significant. The gamma is also far too high and needs to be lowered by around 10%. You'll need to calibrate with a colorimeter or using Nvidia control panel. Unfortunately custom color profiles don't work well with fullscreen games and using Nvidia control panel definitely doesn't. You'll be forced to game in borderless windowed mode.

That said, I can't see myself upgrading from the vg236he any time soon. Text is crisp, colours are great, size is perfect. I recently dropped my Dell 2209wa as a secondary display. It was being shown up by the Asus and annoying me with it's crapness:). Just be aware of the above limitation.

The Samsung 23" models have excellent image quality as standard so little calibration required. Aside from the minor amount of input lag they are better than the Asus.

The input lag on the 700D is so annoying imo frown.gif I tried playing CS GO on it and you get such a floaty feeling. Atm I have the BenQ XL2420T but i think the Asus is probably the best overall 120HZ monitor.

So the colors on the ASUS are good after calibration - is this correct?
