Review of GIGABYTE's 2nd Gen. X79 Workstation MB: X79S-UP5 - Page 26

Wow, flurry of activity since I last posted. Blameless, did you run Memtest86+ on your memory, specifically tests #6 and #8? Do they error out anywhere? What you are describing reminds me a lot of the problem I had with a bad stick of memory. I am not saying that is the case, just offering it up as an option.

I wish F4v had a better change-log...

The memory doesn't error out anywhere at my signature settings, which are considerably more conservative than what was completely stable on my other board just a week ago.

It's done Memtest86 4.0 overnight, 24 hours Prime95 custom Blend, and 3,000% HCI memtest with 12 instances loaded.

Holy crap, F4v has a complete set of adjustable memory timings!

Manual tRC over 32 and everything that was limited to "+1.00000000MHz" before has real values now. There are handful of settings even I don't recognize, but I don't see manual RTL adjustments.

Need to test everything, but this is extremely promising.

Edit: managed to squeeze about a gig more read bandwidth out of the memory by tweaking formerly non-functional tertiary timings, even while loosening tRC and tRFC.

Trying to stabilize 4.4GHz again now.

Still getting idle lock ups. System will run fine as long as I have a stress test going, but after I shut them all down, I either get a hard lock or a BSOD anywhere from instantly to 30 minutes later.

IIRC back in the day, I had an asrock mb that done this. It turns out that my main hard drive was crapping out. Check your event log and see if you're getting errors.

Haven't flashed to the new bios yet for my UP4 (still tweaking). Manage to lower vcore by raising pll voltage to 1.9v. Seems to be the optimal setting. Below and upwards causes it to throw bsod 101. From 1.44v to 1.42 thumb.gif

I'll see if playing with PLL does anything.

Have you tested the PLL overvoltage option? It wasn't doing anything in previous BIOSes, and I haven't noticed a difference with either setting yet.

CPu PLL voltage helps with vcore and frequency a tiny bit on air, but more when on LN2 or DICE. It actually does something on X79 opposed to LGA1155. Also CPu PLL OV doesn't do much on X79, i think either way is the same, but on LGA1155 i am sure you know CPu PLL OV controls a lot of the cpu frequency.

I have noticed some difference from adjusting PLL on LGA-2011, not much, but some. It is interesting to note that I can go as low as 1.3v CPU PLL at 4.3GHz, but I need at least 1.7v for 4.4GHz to be stable. I haven't tested more than 1.85v CPU PLL on this board yet, however. I'll probably give it another bump and see if it does anything to the idle issues I'm seeing.

CPU PLL overvoltage seems to be a fairly key setting on 1155, but so far this Up5 is the only board I've used that has it, and changing the setting does so little that I'm not even sure if the BIOS option works or not.

Good step forward with the memory timings in F4v but the BIOS is buggy as hell though and the default settings for memory when using the XMP profile are much less stable and using default looser timings (for example, my XMP profile reads 243 for tRFC, and BIOS F4u and earlier would select 255, but F4v select 273 which is notably worse than previous BIOS). If you switch to manual timings some of the settings will populate random values. I had tRW I think on bank A reading +43275960MHz and no matter what I try to set it does not adjust to anything, but then on bank B the same setting would be - (yes, a dash), then bank C would be reading +10000000MHz, then bank D would read 0. Then I tried adjusting another timings, I believe that it was tWR and the BIOS started throwing errors (yes, actual BIOS errors) that the value is out of range and it would not stop throwing the same error on the exact same bank. Loading optimized defaults did not help, error persisted. I had to do a full CMOS clear to be able to continue adjustments. Then after CMOS clear the weird values disappeared in but a bunch of other ones were replaced with - (yes, again, that's a dash).

This BIOS, not ready for prime-time. I will use it for a few more days, but I may be going back to F4u for now, though I will probably have to report a bunch of these problems first upstream so they don't keep propagating the problems.

Having said all that, I really do welcome the ability to actually adjust all of the memory timings. If they manage to work out the kinks and tighten up default timings a bit the upcoming BIOS should be quite strong. I don't unfortunately own any more high-speed kits that are 2133MHz or higher so I cannot comment on whether this BIOS makes any difference to the ability to run high-speed DRAM.

I'm currently testing the new bios for UP4, so far so good but my sandy still needs 1.5v@4700mhz redface.gif Cpu pll OV doesn't have any sort of effect on my chip. Maybe it's true, I have the worst oc'ing 3820 on the planet. If she doesn't finish prime blend tonight. I might have to lap her IHS till it's flat and shiny biggrin.gif

I've been experimenting with higher vcore combined with higher PLL, lower VTT, and lower IMC (VCCSA) voltage with good results so far.

Still have a lot of testing to do before I can call 4.4GHz stable though.

I'm liking F4v, but you are correct that it is still very buggy, then again, so are almost all the F4 betas (and every other BIOS for this board thus far).

Something to note regarding F4v:

- Always use "Quick" as expert doesn't allow adjustment of Channel D, which will always throw "value is out of range" errors.

- All the tertiary timings are actually shown as 1 higher than their true value. For example, if you set TWRSR to 3, you actually get 2. This caused me considerable problems until I realized what was going on.

- A few settings still aren't adjustable and report random nonsense as you have noted.

I can't comment on XMP profiles as I don't currently have any DDR3 that uses them (all my memory is hand binned budget stuff).

I'm going to stick with F4v over F4u as the only new bugs are in the memory section, and these are not hard to work around.

I haven't been able to clock my memory any higher yet, but I have been able to increase my memory performance by about 3-4% simply from being able to adjust the tertiary timings manually.
