New Build i7 3770K /GTX 680 - First Custom Loop Input and Suggestions

Thread Starter
Hey Guys,

I've been doing alot of research lately into water as I've always done air cooling, but I'd really like to build a custom loop on my next system. I'd really appreciate some input from some of you guys that have been water cooling for ages and would be glad for suggestions on alternative items/changes in the build.

So here's a list of components that I already have that will be carried over into the build (I will likely replace the PSU if and when I get the 2nd GTX680)

eVGA GTX 680 Superclocked
HyperX KHX2133C11D3K4 - 16 GB DDR3 (4x4)
Corsair 850 Watt (can't remember which model without tearing it out)
Various SSD's and HDD's

The all new components will compose of :

Cooler Master HAF 932 Advanced Blue
Core i7 3770K
ASUS Maximus V Formula
2nd GTX 680 (Later on)

And of course what I would love to have some input and suggestions on ... How I plan to keep this running cool :

1.) XSPC Raystorm Extreme Universal CPU Watercooling Kit w/ EX360 Radiator/D5 Pump/Res :
http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=59_202_972&products_id=33590

2.) Black Ice® GTS Gen Two Stealth 140 Highest Performance Radiator :
http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=59_457_458&products_id=25415

3.) EVGA GTX 680 Waterblock W/ Backplate

4.) Epic T1000 (Rebadged Blue Idigo Xtreme) CPU TIM

5.) Undecided on Fans - Would love some suggestions for Low-Moderate noise

*I do also plan on using the built in VRM block on the Maximus the and it does only have 3/8" fixed barbs.

So my plans for the build are rather simple. I plan on doing the following with the HAF 932 :

1.) Top Mount the 360MM RAD with fans pulling out
2.) Mount the slim 140MM RAD in the factory exhaust location with a fan pulling out
3.) Use a T fitting on the intake of the PUMP/RES combo and install a fill port in the factory provisioned location of the HAF 932
4.) Just make the loop order look good since I won't have to worry about pump/res ordering/location
5.) Populate all of the availible 140MM locations with low noise intake fans to keep everything else cool
6.) I will likely be using a premixed coolant with a biocide - any suggestions appreciated

What I am looking for is a fairly quiet setup, but I do want to be able to push the 3770K to about 4.8 Ghz . Do you guys think this all looks good ? Any changes, Additions, or other recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Josh

Thats nice but why 4.8ghz? Is 4.5 ghz not enough?

You've definitely done your homework thumb.gif love seeing that.

I think you're build components should be fine. If you're going to buy a new case, you might want to look into the NZXT Switch 810, which will allow for easier building/more radiator space should you desire. I'm using it now with a XSPC EX420mm rad up top and an alphacool nexxxos ut60 240mm on the bottom to cool my 3570k and GTX 690. Adding a second GTX680 to your loop might be putting abit too much heat for a slim 140 and 360 to take, which is more reason to consider maybe going for the Switch 810.

I personally wouldn't cool the MB esp. not for a IB rig, as it the motherboard doesn't get that hot (X79 is different) and it will add a lot of restriction to your loop with almost no performance gains.

For coolant the only thing I'd reccomend is Mayhem's X1 or pastel line. I'm using the Pastel Mint Green (see avatar photo) and it looks slick. You also didn't mention what tubing your going to use. I'd stick with Masterkleer or Durelene for clear tubing, otherwise feser for colored tubes.

Hope this helps

EDIT: Missed the fans sorry. I'd personally reccomend Cougar Vortex fans, I'm using 9 140mm ones and 4 120mm ones in my case and they're pretty quiet for what you get in airflow.

Thanks for the input man! I hadn't looked at the switch 810 before, but I do like what I see. Looking at that pic of your system there are you running both radiators in a push pull configuration ? Can't exactly tell through the window.

NP, yeah I am running both in push pull, but if you're going to run push pull for the top you need to get a slimmer rad. If you go that route and want a 420mm I'd take the XSPC EX420, or if you want to go for a 360mm I'd go for the alphacool nexxxos slim line rads, I think they're the ST series.

yeah, you got 'cha a part list, but got a small description on why?
im gunna assume gaming... quiet, nope!

CPU.. what overclock?
i5-3570k.. hyper-threading on games is not heavily used if at all..
overclock to 4.5/4.6.. easier to control the temperatures. also
this will make the radiator selection easier..
the EX360 is fine, until the 680 addition, then not a 140.. 240/280
due to the maybe of a 2nd 680,,
please do not mix radiator cross-lines.. the GTS using 30fpi (high
speed fan) and EX using 20fpi (med fan speed) makes for a noisey
build and hell to buy fans for..
find a 60mm thick rad (alphacool or XSPC RX) due to the low fpi so
you can use any fan and almost any speed for great temps and low
noise. plus the fans aren't more than $10 each.. for quiet speeds.
motherboard.. what features does the MAX V F have that you really need?
XSPC raystorm D5 RX kit for starters... size upon case selection.

So I chose the 3770K for the extra threads. When I'm working on a project for work at home I am usually doing alot of virtulization on my desktop. Currently I am using an X6 1100T which works fairly well in that regard, but the IMC hates having 4x4GB on it(Got the HyperX dirt cheap). I had to play with voltages just to get it stable at stock clocks. So instead of trying for 2x8GB and getting a 4 GHZ (H80 push/pull load as hell) overclock back on it I figured I would just build a new IB box. I picked the Maximus V F cause I do like the Audio Package ASUS uses (Its similar to the one on my CH IV F) and I've had pretty good luck with ASUS ROG boards in the past. I was also considering the Max V GENE since its smaller/cheaper, but still full featured.

So with those considerations in mind and some research on FPI and your input (Thanks BTW!) here's what I am looking at now :

NZXT SWITCH 810 Case

XSPC Raystorm Extreme Universal CPU Watercooling Kit w/ RX240 Rev 2 Radiator/D5 Pump/Res
http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=59_202_972&products_id=33550

http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=59_457_458&products_id=34831

The cougar vortex's look ok as far as CFM and noise, but is the static pressure going to be enough or should I look for another fan ?

COUGAR CF-V12HP
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835553002

COUGAR CF-V14H
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835553003

It also looks like I could squeeze one of these on the rear exhaust fan location :

XSPC RX120 Extreme Performance Radiator Version 2
http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=59_457_667_671&products_id=25387

Thanks again for the input.

EDIT : Swapped RX320 kit for RX240 kit and then swapped UT60 240 for UT60 420 so that I can fit the biggest Rad's in the locations on the case.
