went from RAID 1 to RAID 0

Thread Starter
i made a back up using Norton ghost. then changed from RAID 1 to RAID 0 and reinstalled my backup using the same program. should i be able to see a difference in speed? because i sure cant.

is there anything i need to check/ change that you guys can think of to get a little more speed?

current sector size is 512
NCQ is enabled on both drives
write cache is enabled on both drives
write cache status is set to write through

That actually looks about right for a 1tb stripe.

Do you have any raid 1 benchmarks?

Those drives are not very fast to begin with. Benchmark looks okay as you have to account for how much the drive(s) are filled up to also.. Might try reinstalling your raid drivers for it in windows. Try defragging the drive since you dumped it back over using perfect disk or something along those lines. Thanks

yea I know these drives arent anything special wink.gif now i just need to convince the old lady into a pair of ssd biggrin.gif

no i dont have any benchmarks from the RAID 1 but i thought i would see a bit of improvement going from RAID 1 to 0. ive only got 165gb on them.
ill defrag with perfect disk and see what that yeilds. thanks guys:thumb:

If I remember things correctly......

READING off a RAID1 = you read off both drives at once. So its not quite as fast as RAID0, but its still faster than a single drive.

WRITING to a RAID1 = twice as slow as a single drive.

READING off a RAID0 = twice as fast as a single drive (hypothetically), fastest possible solution.

WRITING to a RAID0 = same as reading.

To be honest, your drives are slow to begin with (comparatively speaking to modern mech drives). So considering you were already on a RAID1 before which is faster usually than a single drive anyway....you probably won't "feel" a difference. You really wouldn't anyway unless you short stroked those down to like 50GB.

You won't FEEL any difference at all, as the access times are still going to be horrible and don't change with RAID modes at all. If you want to FEEL a speed difference, you need to lower your access times. Short stroke those drives to 50GB or less (and don't use the rest), or get a SSD.

EDIT:
And you don't need to RAID SSD's. Just one is plenty fast, you won't even notice a RAID array with SSD's.

ahhh i see specool.gif thanks for that info, especially on the ssd not needing RAID.

how about just adding a ssd to what i have now? using my current 2 drives as RAID 1 for data, backups, ect and a ssd to install windows to?
would that speed things up quite a bit?

Your drives arn't bad, not great either.
Here are my two WD RE4's in a RAID0 setup.

If you want nice numbers to look at for now, do this....

Create a short stroked array of 100gb for OS and select progs then go back and create another array to use the rest of the stripe.

I'll have pics up in a minute.

It would be a night and day difference. And yes, you're fine to use your mech drives in RAID1, with the SSD seperate. RAID mode still passes TRIM commands and all the other AHCI goodies to the SSD...so long as the SSD isn't actually IN a RAID array itself. Just make sure you use your native AMD SATA ports. smile.gif
