Overclocking my cpu caused problems with my graphic cards. Help!

Hi!

I'm new here and I've joined up because I have a problem..

I'm fairly new at overclocking, so I'm not really sure what's happened but I'll go through the process that got me to where I am and what my problem is.

So to start of I got a new motherboard to better support crossfire gpu. What I had was a asus p8p67 mobo, and it's crossfire support was limited. So I purchased the p8p67 EVO that had better support for crossfire.

I installed the mobo and everything was running smoothly. But I figured that I would overclock my i7 2600k using the Asus AI suite II to see if it worked.

But before I did that I updated the mobo BIOS to the newest version.

I then hit the "Fast" cpu overclocking alternative in the AI suite, and everything seemed to have worked out great. When windows rebooted it said that AI suite had successfully overclocked the cpu to 4.4 Ghz.

I figured that I'd check how it performed in 3dmark 11. and to my shock on the first tests ( using mostly the graphics cards) the performance had dropped from a stable average of 70-80 fps to a stuttering average of 20-40 fps (max 60 lowest 10). The cpu related tests ran great.

I tried:

- Reinstalling the graphic drivers
- Removing one card (card still runs 50% as well as it should)
- Tried switching cards (no difference)
- resetting the cpu to standard speeds (made no difference)
- Resetting the BIOS to standard settings. (no help)

If anyone could help out that would be great! the specs in question are in my rig details.

Try uninstalling the auto-overclocking software.

Did you do any testing after updating your MOBO BIOS but before OCing?
It may be an issue with your new BIOS firmware.

Your symptoms would make sense if you had done something like overclocking the FSB or whatever they call it these days...or overclocked the PCIE bus speed (not cool).

Did you change the settings for your video card in the control panel and forget about it?
Uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers will NOT resolve this...you'll have to manually set them to defaults.
At least that's what I had to do with AMD/ATI's CCC.

Thanks for the reply.

No I didn't test the mobo after the BIOS update and before the OC. (kind of stupid I know...)

How would I know if I've accidentally overclocked the FSB or the PCIE bus speed?

I've reset everything in CCC to default.

I'll uninstall the AI suite now and reboot, and see if there's any change.

Thank god, It was just a rookie mistake I guess. Seems like either resetting the CCC to default or removing AI Suite fixed it.

Thanks for the help!

And on to safely overclocking the CPU!

Glad you sorted that out.
Computers are harder to break than some think...
I recently got into an internet argument about proper grounding before working on a PC.
Ugh.
