I7 920 Bottleneck

Will an i7 920 bottleneck 3 gtx 480s in sli?

I just purchased an i7 920 and an EVGA x58 SLI LE board and I'm about to pick up some GTX 480s and I wanted to make sure the 920 could handle them.

You will need to overclock the 920 a bit to keep up with 3 480's. But most 920's are decent overclockers, so no worries. Just use MSI Afterburner and turn on the onscreen gpu load and you will be able to see how much the gpus are being pushed. and overclock based on that. Thanks

Ok, what would be an average overclock to help balance that system?

I have a corsair h60 with push pull blademasters so what would I expect to see?

Go for 4.0, you should get there. This Guide is worth a look. I think you'll be fine unless it's a heavily CPU dependent game.

Ran my 920 at 4.0 right out of the box on an h60 for almost a year. You should be fine.

I hope you've got at least a 1000W, because 480's draw a TON of power.

check my sig.

i7 950 and GTX 690. I really thought id be bottlenecked. when I got the card I was itching to get a new cpu because I knew I was gonna be bottlenecked. alas it still performed great. I still match the benchmarks that people with better cpu's here in OCN and I hardly bottleneck on my games except for a couple of games like starcraft 2 or shogun 2 total war when it gets really cpu extensive

Excellent choice going i7 920. You can get these fairly cheap on EBAY

I have owned 3 i7 920 CPUs. I have two identical systems running now as described below.

Asus P6T Deluxe V1.o i7 920 RAID 0+1 4 1TB drives Water cooled at 3.9Ghz

Asus P6T Deluxe V1.o i7 920 IDE 7200 RPM AIR cooled @ 4.3Ghz

many on-board components can limit your OC potential

I purchased the air cooled system off ebay.

P6t board
OCZ 6gb ram
i7 920
Windows 7 upgrade disk
Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme 1366 heatsink and fan

all for $299 USD

I don't have a kW psu yet, but I will before I drop the third 480 into the system.

I will defiantly shoot for 4.0 GHZ, should I also shoot for a certain range of ram speeds?

I have 6gbs of corsair dominator 1866 that is also coming in, am I right to assume MOAR=better when it comes to speeds, with low relative timings of course.
