Do I need to overclock my unit?

Thread Starter
Greetings!
First of all I apologize if I am repeating a question asked by many, but I was unable to find a solid answer. If anyone knows of a thread that answers my questions please link and would be hugely appreciated.
I recently bought a new system, my first build, and dont really have a clue what I was doing but read a butt load in this last fortnight and here it is:
Mobo: asrock-z77-extreme4-m
CPU: i5-3570k
Ram: patriot viper 1600 16gb DDR3
Hdd: seagate 3.5 barracuda 1tb
Graphics: sapphire 3gb 7950 OC pci-e
Ssd: intel 520 120gb
Psu: corsair tx650 / v2 atx
Case: antec 300
Cost: $1150.00 $AUD
Ok so the main purpose of my build is gaming. Playing SWTOR and a bit of WoW and if anything else comes out that's good tongue.gif
I'm just plugging it into my 51inch HD tv.. Is this going to work? I want to run these games on full graphics with still high FPS. Is there a need to OC? If so can you point me into some direction of BIOS setting I should be using with this build? Or do I just need to trial and error?

It's a nice build. As for overclocking, you shouldn't have to overclock anything at all to max out any game. However, because overclocking the 3570k is as easy as a multiplier change, it's worthwhile to at least overclock it as far as the default voltage will take you. It's essentially a free speed boost.

Awesome thank you. Haven't put it together yet! Get the parts by Wednesday hopefully.. Pretty damn excited!
Ok I will do.. Why run something slower than it can go hey ;P

Yes you need to overclock it! sonic.gif
Umm..not much past 4.5-6 with that board, though devil.gif

To keep the CPU working for a longer period of time (overclocking shortens its' lifespan) and to save electricity.

As far as shortening a CPU lifespan, I've never had a CPU die in 15 years of overclocking.

As far as do you need to overclock? Really you don't, I just built a 3750K rig and it's plenty capable of running games at stock. The question is more about if it's something you'd like to try, and how much you'd like to get into it.

Certainly a mild OC wouldn't hurt anything, 4.0-4.3GHz, but it's not going to add anything to your gaming experience.

Not to the point that it would matter much, Unless you're cranking extreme voltages.

I have to disagree there..more fps..smoother gameplay..faster loading times.

Me too, overclocking my CPU gets me more FPS in my games so i can game at solid 60FPS which is smoother and much better than FPS dropping and raising constantly, makes for a much better gaming experience and its a reason a majority on here overclock tongue.gif
