Need Some information/help with case lighting

Hey Guys,

So I am nearing completion of my rebuild and I've come to the part where I know least and decided to turn to you guys biggrin.gif.

First off here's a photo of my build right now:

I want to get some lighting in here but I've got a few questions to ask before I make my move

1) LED or Cathode? What is the difference in terms of lighting? What I'm thinking of doing (and I'm totally up for suggestions on this) is getting some white lighting to just brighten up the inside of the case a bit. I'm not looking for holy **** it's day in there bright but more a soft glow, which is what I think cathodes/ccfl are better at?

2) Which brand is best for both? In terms of a) longevity b) quality c) light intensity/hue d) anything else I may have missed

3) How much lighting would I need? I was thinking maybe a stip/cathode up top by the radiator and another down on the bottom by the PSU or on the back by the tubing grommets?

4) What kind of mounting equipment will I need? I have some borderline industrial strength double sided 3m tape that I used on my last build to keep my pump in place (it was an absolute ***** getting it out again).

5) I've read talks of needing inverters for cathodes? Can someone shed some light on this?

All help and suggestions are greatly appreciated guys.

1.) Depends on what color you want. Red cathodes emit more of a orange-ish light instead of solid red. LED's have a lot more red look, kind of like fruit punch you might say. That's why I chose my red LEDs.

In terms of strength, they are pretty similar although I would imagine LEDs are a bit bright per watts consumed. Since you want a light glow, cathodes are probably better, although you can get LEDs and just put some parchment paper or thin sheet of paper around them to dim it a bit. Another thing with LEDs is that they can make "spots" of light die to the individual LEDs instead of a solid light like the cathode. This only happens on closer objects though. It tends to blend together when it's a bit farther away from the object it's shining on.

2.) Logises (spelled that wrong) has been pretty good to me for cathodes and LED's. Cathodes will not last nearly as long as LEDs though. My 3 12" LEDs are stll going strong after about a year, but one of my two cathodes burnt out. I think that might be because I tried to hook it up to a fan controller though biggrin.gif.

3.) Two would be okay, but I might just recommend getting three (two for the main part, one for the psu section). That's what I have for mine and it's pretty freaking bright, people have called it a Christmas tree before lol.

4.) They usually come with some cheap crappy velcrow that will last for about a week and finally fall off in the heat of the computer. I myself replaced those with some high quality sewing velcrow from y mom, and those haven't fallen off yet and it's been around a year. Just keep in mind that the heat really does a number on adhesives.

5.) Those should come with the cathode and use a molex connector. If it doesn't then you can order one for pretty darn cheap. I don't think LED's need inverters.

Thanks for the quick reply bud. You think that 3 cathodes wouldn't be too bright? Like I said just a soft glow, I don't want it to drown out the green LED lights that are on the GPU and CPU blocks (can't see them well with my photo because of the flash). I was thinking about getting Logisys before but it's hard to find reviews or commentaries on different lighting outside of youtube videos which aren't always that great either (they talk wayyyy too damn much sometimes lol). Also for the one up top, should I put it between the radiator and the window panel or between the radiator and the MB tray? I'm thinking of getting one really long one to go down the back of the case and then another just along the top right now, god knows it's going to mean I have to find some way to clean up my cables more too mad.gif

Double post sorry. I took your advice and purchased 2 15inch white Logisys cathodes. Going to put one up top and the other either in the back or on the bottom we'll see lol. Thanks for your help Willanhanyard +REP
