Wouldn't SSDs in RAID be faster and be more cost effective, not to mention take much less power? This is just for a home lab not an enterprise solution.

SSDs in RAID are never a good idea, as TRIM commands don't get passed through. Especially with something like a VM lab, where you're going to be creating and deleting massive files all the time. What you can do though, is you can get a RAID card that supports SSD caching, if you don't have one already.

Hell, in my home "lab" I only have four 1TB Caviar Blacks and an SSD, but they get me by smile.gif
I was just pointing out what sort of considerations should be taken into account, that's all!

Any thoughts about using a OCZ RevoDrive 1TB PCI-E Hybrid Solid State Drive for the datastore instead of the 16 drvies in RAID 50?

Dunno how reliable this would be or if someone has attempted something like this.

Sorry I should have tongue.gif

Well this is more personal opinion but I hate all kinds of "hybrid" drives - besides they aren't oriented for the kind of workload you will be having.
I'm also quite sure your RAID 50 array will be much more reliable and capable.

I also strongly suggest using the RAID50, for Thompsonn's reasons and...

1: No Redundancy with the RevoDrive
2: Many drives will give you a lot more versatility with RAID levels and other stuff (especially if you use ZRAID with FreeNAS, which I recommend)

I got all 16 drives installed in the server now. The question now is whether to use a RAID50 array with 2 subunits or 4 subunits.

The RAID controller gives the option to create the following for the RAID50 array:

2 RAID5 subunits (8 drives per subunit) in a RAID0 array = 14 drives + 2 parity drives for a total of 12.74TB usable space

or

4 RAID5 subunits (4 drives per subunit) that are stripped in a RAID0 array = 12 drives + 4 parity drives for a total of 10.92TB usable space

Which would give the best performance? I'm thinking the RAID50 array with 4 subunits might be best.

BTW this is the spec for the server:

Norco RPC-4216 Case
Intel i7 950 Processor
Asus P6X58-E WS Motherboard
24GB (6 x 4GB) GSkill 1600MHz RAM
Corsair HX1000W PSU
3Ware 9650SE-24M8 RAID Controller
16 x 1TB Hitachi 7200 RPM HDDs - RAID50
2 x 74GB WD VelociRaptor 10K RPM HDDs - RAID1
Intel X520-DA2 10GbE Dual Port Server Adapter (E10G42BTDA)

The more drives you have in a RAID 0 stripe the better.

I assume the 4 subunits would act as 4 drives for the RAID0 portion of the RAID50 array?
