If you're doing something that will require management of the server and be able to handle high traffic loads, you should really be renting out a dedicated server or two. They are ultra expensive in comparison to shared-server hosting, but nothing beats having complete and utter freedom to setup exactly what you want and know exactly where the performance issues lay.

I had one site and 4 game servers hosted on a $200/month box several years ago, and it was awesome.

This would be my next suggestion. Share hosting is fine if you are blogging or anything on a small scale, but if it the server gets hacked, all sites are affected. This actually happened to GoDaddy a few weeks ago. At least go Virtual Private Server (VPS) if you want control over security and software installations and such.

They say the servers are somewhere in SEA ... and they pull it up within 6 seconds. I pull it up in 30 seconds (thirty) or more.
